Under the leadership of IMLS Deputy Director for Libraries Maura Marx, IMLS held the first of its Strategic Priorities meetings on April 29, 2014 at the NYPL The New York Public Library. Invited panelists framed key topics around a National Digital Platform, and a broad range of stakeholders participated in the discussion. Over 800 tuned in via live webcast, and the #imlsfocus Twitter conversation was lively. Together with two additional convenings around Learning Spaces in Libraries (San Francisco) and STEM Learning in Libraries (Chicago), this conversation will inform future IMLS funding strategies, particularly for the agency’s National Leadership Grant program.

In 2013, IMLS signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) “to support libraries through public information and engagement opportunities and through the distribution of educational material and training resources on immigration and citizenship.” Established in 2001 as part of the Department of Homeland Security, USCIS is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. Just a few months ago, the IMLS-USCIS MOU was renewed and expanded to include similar opportunities for museums.
