Our fifth and sixth stops of the Civil War to Civil Rights tour took us to Natchez, Mississippi where we visited Forks of the Road one of the most populous domestic slave trade sites in the Antebellum period. We also visited the future home of the Natchez African American USCT Memorial. The Museum contributed over 7,000 names to the Memorial project which will be located there and listed in the exact manner as the Spirit of Freedom African American Civil War Memorial in Washington DC.

🗳️ Today is Election Day! 🗳️ Remember, casting your vote is a powerful act that many of our ancestors fought and sacrificed for but were denied. The United States Colored Troops (USCT) didn’t just fight for freedom—they fought with the hope that one day every voice in this country would have the power to shape its future.

Today, we honor their legacy by voting and by remembering that each ballot cast is a tribute to their courage and vision. Make your voice count—stand on their shoulders, and get out to vote! ✊🏾✨

🎉 Happy 26th Anniversary to the Spirit of Freedom Memorial! 🎉

On July 18th, 1998, we dedicated this monument to honor the brave souls of the United States Colored Troops who fought for freedom and justice. For 26 years, the Spirit of Freedom Memorial has stood as a powerful symbol of courage, resilience, and the enduring legacy of those who paved the way for future generations.

As we reflect on this milestone, we are filled with gratitude for the countless visitors, descendants, and supporters who have helped preserve and celebrate this important piece of history. Thank you for being part of our journey.

Here’s to many more years of remembrance and inspiration.

Today is the 26th anniversary of the dedication of the African American Civil War Memorial here in Washington, D.C. Located at U Street and Vermont Avenue, the memorial honors the more than 200,000 African American soldiers and sailors who served in the U.S. Army and Navy during the Civil War. The central feature is sculptor Ed Hamilton's "Spirit of Freedom." The large bronze statue expresses the determination of the men who helped to end the war and free over four million enslaved people. Curving around the dramatic statue, low walls are covered in lines of names, connecting visitors to the individuals who served and sacrificed. We hope you'll stop by soon to experience this powerful place for yourself.

See It, Be Inspired

The mission of the African American Civil War Museum is to correct a great wrong in history that largely ignored the enormous contributions of the 209,145 members of the United States Colored Troops. It tells the stories and preserves for posterity the historic roles these brave men of African, European, and Hispanic descent played in ending slavery and keeping America united under one flag. The Museum uses a rich collection of artifacts, documents, primary sources and technology to create a meaningful learning experience for families, students, Civil War enthusiasts and historians about the period from the American Civil War to Civil Rights and beyond.

It is the vision of the Museum to motivate and inspire greater civic pride through exposure to the history of the United States Colored Troops which shows abolitionists, organizers, recruiters, politicians, and everyday soldiers working together to achieve the American goals of Freedom and Union.
