Hassell's artistic expression is deeply rooted in the diasporic experience, as she reimagines and re-informs the narratives of Black futures. The resulting present manifests as living "Artifacts" or her ongoing "alibii" figuration, both of which serve as acts toward afrofuturism.

The Simone Leigh Lecture Series |
We are pleased to announce our second lecturer, Amina Shumake. She is second year doctoral student at Vanderbilt University.
Hailing from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Amina Shumake is currently a second year Ph.D. student in the Department of Religion at Vanderbilt University. With a concentration in theological studies, her interests lie in the intersection of Womanist Theology, Black Feminist theory, African American visual art, and continental philosophy. With an inclination toward ontologies of disorder, transition, fluidity, and trespass, her research ultimately considers black q***r womanhood as an aesthetic phenomena that escapes representation.

Meet The Artist |
NDEWENDEUL ‘14 was a series created by Djibril Drame to reinforce positive images of the Islamic community that dominates Senegal. The work of his lens extends beyond the captured moment, figures, and scenes. By installing a portable studio in his community, he welcomed the members to be a part of the (re)telling of their truths and play active roles in molding the worlds perception of what their contributions are.
Thank you for joining us as we shared more about the man behind the lens. Be sure to RSVP to the opening reception on 7/27. Link in bio.
Meet The Artist |
While much of Djibril Drame’s cultural analyses are contextualized in Senegal, it is without saying that his exploration of culture and humanity is diasporic. In the last three years, Drame has explored identity, expression, and purpose for African descended men in the hopes reconnecting lost souls to their source. In using his lens to highlight the connection between black male subjects and the natural elements, Drame made their materials spiritual and their beings divine.
To see these beautiful works and learn more about the artist, RSVP to the opening reception using the link in our bio.

ONE DAY UNTIL CLOSING! Today, we’re showcasing “The Artist’s Process” — highlighted in our current exhibition catalogue 📖✨ In this section of the catalogue, we dive into SHAN’s collaging process used throughout “derivatives, memory, & the mundane”. See below for the breakdown! 1️⃣ A Narrative: To begin, SHAN selects a theme or topic she wants to explore, in this case communal spaces from her childhood memory. 2️⃣ Image Selection: As a documentary photographer, her archive is full of a variety of images she references to tell new stories. 3️⃣ Digital Mock-Up: SHAN then creates a digital version of the image where she copies, cuts, and pastes over 100 images in their finest detail to tell the narrative. 4️⃣ Hand-Collage: The artist then pastes the collage material onto Stonehenge paper for a gritty, tangible feeling. 🖼 “Untitled”, Process Screen Recording If you haven’t had a chance, make sure you stop by the gallery today or tomorrow from 12-7pm before the exhibition closes out〰️
