Between Tide & Concrete, 2026

Acrylic Monotype Collage on Canvas
36 × 60 in.

This work lives somewhere between stillness and movement. Between the built world and the emotional weight we carry through it. I wanted the figure to feel grounded yet drifting, like someone learning how to hold softness inside a world of structure, pressure, and expectation.

Part of an ongoing exploration around water, memory, migration, and the quiet architecture of becoming.

Brooklyn has been waiting for Jean-Michel to come home.”

Seventeen years after opening in Bed-Stuy, founders Stevenson Dunn Jr. and Erwin John are bringing one of Brooklyn’s most influential artists back to the borough through “Our Friend, Jean: Early Works of Jean-Michel Basquiat.”

The exhibition features rare early works, archival material, and intimate photographs from Alexis Adler, Basquiat’s former roommate and partner, documenting the artist before international fame. The collection previously traveled on a six-city HBCU tour, introducing Basquiat’s work to historically Black colleges for the first time.

“What we’re really hoping is that this is the start of something,” Dunn said, speaking on the vision of creating a permanent home for Basquiat’s work in Brooklyn.

Inside the exhibition, Brooklyn Magazine spoke with Dunn and Adler about accessibility and why Basquiat’s legacy belongs in the borough that shaped him.

See you in Baltimore for Scout Art Fair during Artscape.

This new body of assemblage works including Sunday Candy, Granny’s Prayas, and Hands That Raised Us is rooted in memory, lineage, and migration. Built from monotype collage, found objects, and textiles gathered from Senegal, Martinique, Trinidad, Barbados, Mexico, and Kenya alongside fabrics from my mother’s closet, the works reflect ancestry, care, and the quiet labor of the hands that shape us.
