Join the Warsaw Historical Society for a field trip to the Santa Fe Railway Historic Depot Complex in Ft. Madison on Wednesday, July 27, at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments and another tour follow at the Kingsley Inn, also in Ft. Madison.
The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Depot was built to replace a one-story building that was lost to a fire on June 6, 1909. Upon completion a little more than a year later, it opened to the public on July 28, 1910. The ample waiting rooms, offices, and portico at the east end welcomed passengers for over one-hundred fifty years, before retiring from service in 1968.
In 2012, the depot was elevated and rebuilt with passenger service in mind. Nine years later, the Amtrak passenger station was relocated to the depot and the North Lee County Historical Society needed to move its artifacts to the Railway Division Freight Office and the CB&Q Depot. Amtrak service returned to Ft. Madison on December 13, 2021, when the Southwest Chief stopped at the historic depot for the first time in more than 50 years.
Andy Andrews will guide the tour of the Santa Fe Railway Division Freight Office, built around 1936, which showcases 19th and early 20th Century local history, games, toys, household goods, and special Sheaffer Pen Company, Civil War, and Iowa State Penitentiary exhibits. He commented to me that inmates at the penitentiary manufactured shoes for the Huiskamp Bros. Company -Boots and Shoes, based in Keokuk, Iowa, and noted that the company also had a shoe factory in Warsaw.
Kathy Billman will guide the tour of the CB&Q Depot, built in 1898, which serves as the NLCHS Transportation Museum and features railroad and river exhibits. This musem also covers the 1993 and 2008 floods.
Comprised of two historic buildings, the Kingsley Inn originally housed a distillery, built in 1847, and an apothecary, built in 1858. These businesses evolved into various retail shops, including a barbershop and a wallpaper store, but the upstairs rooms were always reserved for living space.
The buildings were joined in 1910 to become a laundry that lasted until 1978. The inn was purchased and rehabbed by a development company
The Kingsley Inn was founded in 1990. It was purchased by Lori Illner and her partner in 2013; they spent the next six months upgrading the heating and cooling systems and rehabbing the rooms.
Chi Eastin, the general manager of the Kingsley Inn, will greet us at 3:00 p.m. to tell the inn's story and give a tour of the downstairs rooms. The upstairs rooms may be fully occupied due to the Nauvoo Pageant, but we will be able to view those that are vacant. Refreshments will be served in the Club Room.
The Warsaw Historical Society and guests will meet at the Warsaw Museum, 401 Main Street, at 12:00 p.m. to carpool to the museums. For those of you who would like to meet in Ft. Madison at 1:00 p.m., the Santa Fe Railway Division Freight Office is located at 812 10th Street. Please call Debbie Callaghan at 217-219-1188 to make reservations to help in planning the refreshments.

Warsaw Historical Society Tours
Grand Theatre and Keokuk Union Depot

Join the Warsaw Historical Society for a field trip to the Grand Theatre in Keokuk, Iowa, on Monday, May 16, at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments and another tour follow at the Keokuk Union Depot.
The Grand Theatre was built on the foundation of the Keokuk Opera House, which was designed by Chicago architect, Oscar Cobb, and constructed in 1879 at a cost of $30,000. With seating for 1,064 patrons, it was the largest theater in Keokuk at the time, and hosted theater productions, musicals, minstrel shows, vaudeville performances, and motion pictures.
The Baker-Dodge Theater Company acquired the Opera House on January 12, 1914, and renamed it the Grand Theatre. The stately building was destroyed in a fire on December 7, 1923.
A little more than two years later, with “stimulating influence” from Merle F. Baker, who noted “we have to have a live theater place in Keokuk,” it was rebuilt and reopened on the same site on January 27, 1925.
Dianne Stanley, president of the Grand Theatre Commission, credited Baker with urging Keokuk residents to contribute to funding the new building; she noted that this performing arts center is currently funded through grants and various fundraisers. Bill Vandersall of the Grand Theatre Foundation, writes grants to fund capital improvements, including the new seating throughout the auditorium and the cost of installing new carpeting in August. The Grand Theatre Commission is hosting a sale of seats to repay the foundation and ensure that a fund is continually available to maintain the building. Initially, more than 750 seats were available for purchase; currently, only about 100 balcony seats remain. Patrons’ names are engraved on brass plaques on “their” seats.
The Grand Theatre Commission funds smaller improvements; Stanley credited Commission member, Jerry Herr, for his “invaluable” expertise in making necessary repairs and maintaining the building.
Built in 1891, the Romanesque Revival-style Keokuk Union Depot was designed by the architectural firm, Burnham and Root of Chicago. The city of Keokuk acquired the depot in 2011 for historic preservation and use as a venue for community events.
With the cost of restoring the roof projected at more than a million dollars, the Jeffris Family Foundation gave a generous $333,000 matching grant to the Keokuk Union Depot Foundation, who launched a Capital Campaign in 2014 to secure funding for phases of the project.
Substantial funding from the Iowa Historical Resource Development Program (HDRP), local foundations, community groups, and individuals ensured that the goal would be met, and work on the central tower and tile roof began in July 2016, the depot’s 125th anniversary. By 2018, major restoration on the roof was complete. Local volunteers work on smaller ventures.
Dianne Stanley will greet us at 1:00 p.m. for a tour of the Grand Theatre. Steve Celania will be on hand for a tour of the depot at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the depot.
The Warsaw Historical Society and guests will meet at the Warsaw Museum, 401 Main Street, at 12:30 p.m. to carpool to the theatre. For those of you who would like to meet in Keokuk, the Grand Theatre is located at 26 N. 6th Street. Please call Debbie Callaghan at 217-219-1188 to make reservations to help in planning the refreshments.

Warsaw Historical Society Membership Meeting

The Warsaw Historical Society will host its April membership meeting on Monday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m. at the Warsaw Public Library, 1025 Webster Street, Warsaw. The program will feature
Mike Beall, Helen Lyons, and Bruce Moechnig, members of Standing Bear Council.

Beall will discuss Native Americans’ ceremonial, cooking, and medicinal uses of herbs and the best practices in growing them. Lyons has visited the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas and will discuss the impact they have on the environment; their roots grow deeper, preventing soil erosion, and the roots loosen the soil so it can absorb water better. Tallgrass prairies facilitate carbon sequestration, the reduction of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Moechnig will compare the characteristics of native bees – there are about 4,000 native bees – and their life cycles with honey bees. Native American enjoy using honey in their diet currently, but in earlier times, honey wasn’t readily available because the native bees produce significantly less than honey bees. Lyons and Moechnig will also share which plants and trees promote health for birds and pollinators.

Moechnig will also discuss the history of Dadant & Sons, the premier beekeeping supply and equipment company worldwide since 1863. Moechnig is a beekeeper and owner of Red Road Acres Farms in Quincy; he will bring jars of his honey to sell.

For more information on this program, please call Debbie Callaghan at 217-219-1188.

We were honored to host the Warsaw Illinois Historical Society and Museum yesterday! They toured our North Lee County Historical Society museums and depots then the Kingsley Inn. It’s always fun to share our history!

As I spoke about the Inn’s history and items within, they enjoyed wine from Baxter's Vineyards & Winery, Press House Winery and delicious cake from The Major Oak British Cafe & Restaurant.

What a fun afternoon! Thank you for coming!

I'm also researching George Redeforth and the ferry boats he captained along with his wife Nellie Stenson.
I am seeking information about some Warsaw history. My ggg grandfather John Wagner bought the "Fuller" farm south of town aka Grand View Farm around 1869 and his daughter Caroline (married John Zobel) lived there for the rest of her life. I would love to find some photos of the property, the people, etc.
I just published a article that mentions Warsaw during the Mormon troubles period. The Warsaw House once stood at the corner of second main where Sandra Caldwell's house is now.
I'm a historian from the U.S. Naval Academy working on a book on the early Roosevelts. I understand that a William Henry Roosevelt moved to Warsaw in 1837. Do you have any detailed information about him? I know he was a lawyer and an anti-Mormon Whig and that his family came from New York. His father was James J. Roosevelt (hardware merchant, Roosevelt & Son at 94 Maiden Lane) and he graduated from Columbia in 1826. His brother was Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt who was Theodore Roosevelt's grandfather. I'm very curious about why he moved to Warsaw. Is it possible that he moved out that way to set up a connection for Roosevelt & Son. His father died in 1840 and he received an inheritance. Perhaps he then decided to stay put. Any help you could give would be very appreciated. I would really be happy to find any letters between William and his family back in New York.
My husband and i just purchased the historic home on 4th and north 2nd st in Warsaw....Looking for pictures and history.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to and with you tonight and the outpouring of thanks that JOYCE and i received and appreciated.
Hope this is OK to post here for folks outside of Warsaw. "The History of Warsaw Illinois" is now available on Kindle (reader is free) at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HDSXV9X It is updated. Covers the settle of Warsaw, the Mormon Period, and and a big section of the boom and bust of Warsaw. First book of its kind. Did you know 4 US Presidential candidates lived in or near Warsaw? How about clysdale horses in Warsaw? It's all in the book, download on Kindle or your pc.
Below is 4th of July parade in Warsaw, most likely between 1905-1910. Did you know that one year it was proposed to NOT celebrate the 4th of July in Warsaw? (It wasn't during the World Wars, Civil War, or the Depression, by the way.) I tell of the discussion NOT to celebrate the 4th of July in my "History of Warsaw" book, which will be signed after my free presentation at the Warsaw High School this Monday, July 9th, at 7 pm. Who would want to skip a 4th of July celebration in Warsaw, and why? (Send me a message on Facebook if you are not in the Warsaw area and want a copy of my book).
We neglected to get contact information from “Joe” when we were there last Saturday. Could someone help please?
