National Anthem Day is celebrated on March 3rd each year, commemorating the adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem of the United States in 1931. The day honors the history and significance of the anthem, which was inspired by Francis Scott Key's experience during the Battle of Fort McHenry in 1814.

On February 19, 1945, U.S. Marines landed on the volcanic sands of the island, beginning a 36-day conflict that would become a defining moment in military history. The courage displayed by those who fought — symbolized forever by the iconic flag-raising atop Mount Suribachi just days later — remains a testament to the "uncommon valor" of the Greatest Generation.

As we look back 81 years later, we honor the memory of the thousands who gave their lives and the veterans who carried the spirit of Iwo Jima home. We will never forget.

In total, 2,403 Americans died when the Empire of Japan launched an air raid on the U.S. Navy base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. The United States declared war against Japan the following day.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, marked annually on the anniversary of the attack, honors the memory of military personnel and civilians who died.
A congressional resolution passed in 1994 requires that from sunrise to sundown on December 7, flags be flown at half-staff to honor those lost in the attack and to remember an infamous event in U.S. history.
