On 01 June 1944, the last training casualties (of 42 total between 27 August 1943 and 01 June 1944) occurred when 19-year-old 2nd Lt. Lawrence Lilburn Helton (born 27 August 1924) and 22-year-old 2nd Llt. Barto Byra Hay, Jr. (born 30 November 1921) died in a plane crash near the auxiliary airfield in Bono, AR.

This presentation explores the hidden realities behind WWII escape lines, bomber crew survival, and the stories often left out of traditional wartime narratives. Through original archival research surrounding the B-17 Baby Dumpling, attendees will examine how history is preserved, interpreted, and sometimes obscured over time.

Darrah has been a tremendous blessing to the Wings of Honor Museum through her passion for preserving history, her dedication to learning, and her willingness to serve wherever needed. Her hard work and enthusiasm have made a lasting impact, and we are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished.

We’re honored to share that the Wings of Honor Museum has been named Silver Winner for “Best Place to Take Visitors” in the Northeast Arkies Best awards.

This recognition means a great deal—not just to us, but to the generations of airmen, veterans, and community members whose stories are preserved within our walls. Every visitor who walks through our doors becomes part of that mission.

From World War II training at Walnut Ridge Army Air Field to the Cold War era and beyond, this museum stands as a place where history is remembered, honored, and shared.
