Koke'e and Waimea Canyon State Parks are open. However, several construction projects are going on simultaneously, which can cause confusion.
Waimea Canyon Lookout is closed for viewing platform repairs and stabilization. It is very invasive, so it had to be closed. Barring weather and any other delays, it is due to reopen by October.
Vehicle access has been closed between Kalalau and Pu'u o Kila Lookouts for several years. Kalalau has been and still is available to the public and vehicles. They are currently repaving the road, and it should be done sometime in the middle of September, barring weather and other delays. Currently, they are preventing people from walking the road to Pu'u o Kila and the Pihea Trail system. That is new.
The Department of Transportation and its contractors are working on Waimea Canyon Drive and Koke'e Road above the junction to about mile marker 11. Right now, there is a concentration of work on Waimea Canyon Drive, and I would direct traffic to Koke'e Road from Kekaha instead of using Waimea Canyon Drive. Please check with the DOT—they have an excellent weekly report on road closures that they email to whoever subscribes. You can expect delays, especially if using Waimea Canyon Drive.
So, what is there to see currently? There are several viewpoints along Koke'e Road past Waimea Canyon Lookout. Please ask people to stay behind the guardrails. Some places where people are climbing on the sides are undercut by wind and could possibly cave in, and if anyone slips towards the canyon, it is thousands of feet down with nothing to catch them. There is a fine lookout at Puu ka Pele Picnic Area, Puu Hinahina Lookout, and, of course, Kalalau Valley. The museum and Lodge are open daily at Park Headquarters. There is very little you are missing due to the closures, but there are some inconveniences.
In the future, State Parks will be paving Koke'e Road between mile markers 14 and roughly 16, which has been of great concern for a number of years now due to the extreme pothole issues. It will mean a one-lane situation. It is said to begin as soon as the road is finished at the end of the road. A reminder: the contractors set the work schedules. If the weather continues to be dry, the work will likely be done in good time.
