Rodeo cowboy “Dusky Deamon” Bill Pickett was born in Williamson County on December 5, 1870. After leaving school at a young age to work as a ranch hand, Pickett developed the technique of "bulldogging." This method involved biting a steer's lip and wrestling it to the ground, inspired by observing herding dogs.

Pickett and his brothers established the Pickett Brothers Bronco Busters and Rough Riders Association, showcasing their skills. In 1905, he joined the renowned 101 Ranch Wild West Show, becoming a star performer. Pickett's fame led to his appearance in early motion pictures, including the 1921 film "The Bull-Dogger."

In 1971, he became the first African American inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s Rodeo Hall of Fame. A Texas historical marker commemorating his life was dedicated in Taylor’s Heritage Square in 1992, and a prominent statue of Pickett stands at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

We are open for tours Sunday, Oct.27th 2-5 pm. Our all volunteer club preserves a replica of the Anderson Mill 1850-1890. Miss Minnie's mill powered by the hand built 16ft water wheel demonstrates 19th century technology that ground corn and gunpowder in the days before electricity. The pioneer museum demonstrates many of the home crafts of the 1850-1890 time period. The Quilters will be displaying many quilts each with a story to tell.
