We're gearing up for our November 22nd event where all the items from the 1976 Time Capsule will be displayed!

Included was the 100-year celebration book from the Visitation BVM Church in Vienna.

"The naming of the town is noteworthy. Dr. V. G. Latham, the presiding judge of the county court, wanted the commissioners to name the town Vie Anna, in honor of a young woman of his family who had recently died. The name of the Austrian Capitol, Vienna, was accepted as a compromise."

The Tricentennial 2026 Vienna Time Capsule Project has officially commenced & we need your help!

Calling all organizations, schools, sports teams, governing officials, etc., help us fill the time capsule with mementos, pictures, stories, predictions, and more πŸ€—

The 2026 vault will be sealed with the intention of being opened 50 years from now during the United States Tricentennial Celebration in 2076.

Groups interested in participating may pick up an envelope to fill from Heartland Regional Library Vienna Branch or The Bus Stop - Coffee & Gathered Goods. We ask that they are returned by Friday, November 6.

The grand sealing of the time capsule will be Sunday, November 22 from 1-3 at The Visitation Catholic Church basement.

The 1976 time capsule idea was first started by Mr. Tom Coffey, and we're honored to continue it with a 2026 version 😍 More to come on this fun project!

Today we received a very special delivery, an original mail buggy used for the Vichy route! Graciously donated by Donn James, grandson of mail man Robert Lee James. Pulled by 2 horses, this wagon was used until 1924 to deliver mail along a 26-mile route, 6 days a week for ten years.

Dan & Randy James, grandsons of Alonso & Nanny James, obtained & delivered the buggy. It makes a perfect addition to our new agriculture room in the Maries County Building. Thank you all so much!!

Another fascinating find out of the 1976 capsule, is the Vienna Centennial book! Sales of this book, published in 1955, was to help fund the purchase of the Old Jail and to restore it to the museum it is today. That plan worked out pretty good and then some!

The book includes history of Maries County & Vienna in regards to geology, settlements, the mound builders, County government, schools, newspapers, and more.

Copies of the Vienna Centennial are still available for $5 in theHistorical Society's Research Room, in the basement of the Maries County Courthouse Wednesdays from 1-4.
