Rock On Mississippi Welcome to Rock On Mississippi! We're a couple of ROCK HOUNDS from Vicksburg! Petrified wood is the Mississippi state stone.

We're a couple of rock hounds from Vicksburg, MS that have a passion for petrified wood. We enjoy hunting for it as well as other gems, fossils and minerals in our beautiful Mississippi creeks. Rock On Mississippi is a tribute to this and our discoveries as well as the rich and diverse geological history we have here. Most petrified wood we find dates back to the Eocine period more than 30 million

years ago! Here we're sharing some of our best specimens with you. Some of them we like to leave in their natural form while others are hand painted and decorated by local artists and are one of a kind original works of art. Petrified Forest National Park, Colorado. I saw this in one of the Dakotas (forgot which). What happens is quartz and other minerals got trapped in the wood and preserved parts of the trees, resulting in wood that feels like a rock.
