More than creating an “image,” Nathanson seeks to generate force through the sequencing of color. As she explains, “we move across, while the color intensity makes the colors radiate, come forward, and the overlaps are an energy of pressure upon the surface and the simpler glow of a color.” Here, color becomes an expressive language shaped by pressure. Influenced by Color Field painter Kenneth Noland, who emphasized the “expansiveness” of color, Nathanson extends this idea by acknowledging a tension: color not only expands, but also recedes, shifts, and moves across the painting in relation to its containment.

The scene is set within pieces of a shipping crate, which act as a frame and point to global transport and trade. Ivory has long been used for decorative and functional objects and was once widely traded with little regulation. The painting alludes to the harm done to elephants, suggesting how they have been historically linked to systems that turn animal life into commodities. The crate becomes both a literal and symbolic container, highlighting the tension between the elephant’s quiet presence and the human systems surrounding it.

National Nonprofit Day is a time to recognize the organizations working every day to support communities, create opportunities, and make a positive impact. And the Vero Beach Museum of Art is proud to be one.

This year, we’re celebrating The Circle and the meaningful impact its members make in our community. The Circle is a group of philanthropic-minded women committed to making a difference by funding VBMA community-focused initiatives through art enrichment programs that enhance the lives of Treasure Coast residents. Formed to bring friends together, The Circle magnifies the impact of individual giving by pooling members’ gifts to support the Museum’s key outreach initiatives.

Because of The Circle, we can provide free field trips and bus reimbursements for Indian River County schools, bring art experiences directly into classrooms through programs like Museum Explorations/Museum Explorations on the GO, and offer free Veterans art classes in our studios, complete with art materials and private gallery time.

Every gift helps us remove barriers, reach more people, and fulfill our mission to make the arts accessible and meaningful for our community.
