Happy Bacon City week from the Red River Valley Museum! While the town fires up the griddle, we’re celebrating in our own museum-y way!

Our staff is recataloging the Taylor Dabney mineral collection and this specimen caught our eye today. Nature’s own thick-cut! 🥓

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome Vernon Elementary School 3rd graders for a specialized tour all about animals!

Our curious young scientists got up close with real-life examples of scales, feathers, and fur, then put their super-sleuth observation skills to work classifying animals like true naturalists! Our staff made the day extra special with a hands-on touch exhibit packed with textures from across the animal world. Soft, bumpy, smooth, and everything in between!

The stars of the show? Museum team member Faith brought out her scaly friends, Cornbread the Corn Snake and Beans the Hognose Snake. These two slithery celebrities helped students see just how different animals can be, even within the same kingdom!

We LOVE helping teachers make their lessons come alive and leave a lasting impact. With enough notice, we’re happy to curate a tour to fit your TEKS. Help us help you!

Ready to plan your class’s visit? Reach out to book your tour today!

Our temporary exhibit “Forgotten Founders” will be up for a few more months. Be sure to stop by and see it before these artifacts and objects return to the archives!

Local historians Tony & Gavin are deeply invested in learning more about all things Vernon, including photographer D.P. Sink. We were thrilled to be able to give them a closer look at the photos on display so they could see the details up close and inspect handwritten notes on the backs!

This week has been full of transformation! Lighting is going in, and our walls are being textured to echo the stucco Spanish-style architecture of Electra Waggoner Biggs' home near Santa Rosa Lake. We're also cleaning and prepping objects for their return to display!

Take a look at this saddle and head stall. 👀 Any guesses on who it belonged to?

Drop your guess in the comments!
