The Utah Historical Society is proud to launch Peoples Online, a digital component of the multi-year effort, The Peoples of Utah Revisited Initiative.

In 1976, ethnographer Helen Zeese Papanikolas led the original Peoples of Utah project — the first major ethnographic work to document the state's Native American, Black, Asian, Jewish, Latino, Middle Eastern, and European communities.

Fifty years later, Utah’s demographics have shifted significantly. Over 23 percent of our population now identifies as a racial or ethnic minority, and more than 106 languages are spoken in Salt Lake Valley schools. To ensure all Utahns are reflected in the historical record, the Utah Historical Society embarked on a four-year initiative to expand this vital work.

We are launching this permanent, evergreen digital resource on July 22nd, coinciding with the Utah Historical Society’s 129th birthday.

Learn more about the Peoples of Utah Revisited on our website: https://history.utah.gov/peoples-of-utah-revisited/ and look out for the official launch of Peoples Online this week!

How do you build a massive brick building when the shipping costs are completely out of your budget?

You find a legal loophole and force the US Postal Service to deliver it for you.

In 1916, a businessman named William Coltharp wanted to build a brand new bank in Vernal, Utah. He found the perfect bricks in Salt Lake City, but there was one huge problem. The town was incredibly remote, and hiring private freight wagons to haul 80,000 heavy bricks over 120 miles of rough terrain was going to bankrupt the entire project.

But Coltharp read the fine print and found a brilliant workaround.

The US government had just launched the Parcel Post service, which offered incredibly cheap flat-rate shipping for any package under fifty pounds.

So, instead of paying for expensive freight, Coltharp had the brick company pack 80,000 bricks into thousands of individual 50-pound crates and literally dropped them in the mail.

The postal service was completely blindsided. Mail carriers were legally forced to haul over forty tons of heavy masonry across the mountains, completely paralyzing the local post office routes.

The government was so furious about being tricked into doing heavy construction hauling that the Postmaster General had to instantly rewrite federal law, officially banning Americans from mailing entire buildings.
