FISH OUT OF WATER🎣 June 29th to August 16th
Reception: August 1st

Celebrate summer at Cee Cee’s Lounge with our featured artist Aya Naoe and her fish art!

Naoe’s art primarily consists of fish, inspired by her parent’s sushi restaurant in Sioux Falls 🍣
Through fish Naoe explores her identity crisis as a second generation Japanese American and her struggle against cultural norms as well as feelings of not fully belonging to Japan or America.

Cee Cee’s Lounge will be featuring two gil-ty pleasure limited edition drinks: “The Red Herring” Mocktail and the “Shark Bait” Cocktail. 🐟🐡🦈

We hope to see you there!

Due to foreseen circumstances well within my control, I (Kayli) failed to communicate a pickup time for Chris’s Faculty Show sculptures, so they ended up being accepted into the Spring Student Show. Congrats Chris!

Chris Meyer, Hollow Mountain

Artist Statement:
Hollow Mountain is part of my series of cast iron sculptures, Excessive Landscapes. Practically, Hollow Mountain represents a mold pattern I would create to make a resin-bonded sand mold to cast metal into. Conceptually, Hollow Mountain comments on the vapid nature of excess and materialism through the exploration of the inherently translucent and empty qualities of packing materials.
My work often depicts a thought or feeling from an individual moment rendered as a sculptural form. These Excessive Landscapes were imagined while going through a horrid amount of boxes and packaging from numerous shopping retailers when helping to clean out my mother’s house and influenced by my multitude of road trips taken throughout the mountainous western states to cast iron. My work in cast iron explores representational elements as metaphors for observations of current society and the environment. Regardless of the individual nature of the work, my objective is to create art that is humanist in nature.
Excessive Landscapes utilizes packing materials to create mold patterns for mountainous forms and individual components as imagined landscapes cast in iron. This work cannot help but comment on the accumulation of plastic in our environment as well as consumer culture that drives much of this accumulation. I believe each material carries its own baggage or history. Sensitivity to or an understanding of the material is a crucial component of my work. My intent for this work is to give material that seems trivial, even inconsequential, a substantial mass and seriousness. To make something that weighs almost nothing have real weight as to contradict material qualities in the finished work and through my artistic process. To elevate the banal to the sublime through thoughtfulness, absurdity and a bit of humor.
