Museum of Ventura County The Museum of Ventura County first opened in 1913 in the newly built Ventura County Courthouse (now Ventura City Hall).

The Museum of Ventura County engages participants in meaningful experiences with history, art, culture, and each other by aspiring to spark curiosity and encourage compassion to build community and connection. At that time, it was known as the Pioneer Museum, its collections of artifacts and curios were the legacy of Dr. Cephas Bard, a Pennsylvania doctor who came to Ventura after the Civil War. A compassionate man with wide-ranging interests, Dr. Bard accepted historical objects in lieu of cash payment for his services. Priceless Chumash, Spanish and Mexican-American objects from his collection are on display in the galleries today. In 1977, the Museum moved to its 15,000 square foot building on Ventura’s Main Street, near historic Mission San Buenaventura.

Join us on Sunday, October 18 for a FREE community celebration honoring Filipino American history, culture, creativity, and Kapwa. This year’s Fiesta takes place on the anniversary of the first recorded landing of Filipinos in Morro Bay, California.

🌟 Meet this year’s featured speakers:

Emma Malabuyo — Olympian Gymnast & UCLA Coach
Jay Carlon — Dancer & Performing Artist

Speaker programming will be ASL interpreted.

🎶 Plus, enjoy music by DJ Derf, traditional Filipino dance, an Eskrima demonstration with Nelita Villezon, exhibiting artists, food and drinks, skill-shares, live screenprinting, Mahjong, kids crafts, a photobooth, community booths, and more!

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the rich histories, enduring traditions, and vibrant cultures of Indigenous communities. MVC recognizes Ventura County as the traditional homeland of the Chumash people, whose cultural heritage and connection to the land continue to thrive today.

🥫✨ THE CAN SURVIVED.

The beans are gone. The smell is gone. Peace has been restored. 😌

After a VERY questionable journey, our Can of Nope is finally clean! Collections Manager Brittany Webb carefully removed the contents and cleaned the can so its original label and history can be safely preserved in the Museum’s collection.

From smelly beans to preserved history… what a glow-up. ✨🥫

🥫 CAN OF NOPE! 🤢

We wish you could smell this video… actually, no we don’t. 💀

Our Collections Manager, Brittany Webb, cracked open a VERY old can of beans—and let’s just say, time was not kind to what was inside. 🤮

But there’s a reason for the stink! Brittany removed the old (and extremely smelly) beans so the can and its original label can be safely preserved as part of the Museum’s collection.

History isn’t always pretty… and apparently, it doesn’t always smell great either. 🫣

Nuestra Gerente de Colecciones, Brittany Webb, abrió una lata MUY vieja de frijoles y, digamos que el paso del tiempo no fue nada amable con lo que había adentro. 🤮

¡Pero hay una razón para aguantar el mal olor! Brittany retiró los frijoles viejos (y extremadamente apestosos) para poder conservar de manera segura la lata y su etiqueta original como parte de la colección del Museo.

What's worse than opening an old can of beans? Opening a REALLY old can of beans. 💀

Meet Brittany Webb, our Collections Manager, who's taking one for the team by opening a historic can of beans and removing its contents—all in the name of preservation!

Why save an old can of lima beans?

Because lima beans were once one of Ventura County’s most important crops. A century ago, the county produced an estimated 75% of the world’s lima beans, earning the region a reputation as the bean capital of the world.
This can, packaged in Oxnard by the California Lima Bean Growers Association, is a small piece of that much bigger story.

Conoce a Brittany Webb, nuestra Gerente de Colecciones, quien se está sacrificando por el equipo al abrir una histórica lata de frijoles y retirar su contenido… ¡todo en nombre de la conservación!

¿Por qué conservar una vieja lata de frijoles lima?

Porque los frijoles lima fueron, en su momento, uno de los cultivos más importantes del Condado de Ventura. Hace un siglo, el condado producía aproximadamente el 75% de los frijoles lima del mundo, lo que le dio a la región la reputación de ser la capital mundial del frijol lima. 🫘

Esta lata, empacada en Oxnard por la California Lima Bean Growers Association, es una pequeña pieza de una historia mucho más grande.
