Today, as we recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day, we are reminded that salmon is central to the way of life of our Native neighbors. For millennia, the creeks and streams of Vashon Island teemed with salmon.
Returning salmon in significant numbers to our watershed is complex. Thankfully, many competent people are working on solutions, including the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, the Vashon-Maury Land Trust, Vashon Nature Center, landowners, and many others. The Puyallup Tribe is also collaborating on Judd Creek restoration projects.
