Joyful community event at VCA from 3 - 5 pm, Friday, June 19th.
Juneteenth marks a history of delayed freedom for black people throughout the United States. It is a celebration of black resilience and culture. Children are especially encouraged to attend—this is a space for learning, joy, and togetherness across generations.

Dorothy Berry, Digital Curator at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, will share stories of lesser-known individuals whose work helped safeguard Black history for future generations.

Gansango Music & Dance will be grooving, and Chef Dre Neely from Gravy will be cooking!

Come together in reflection, celebration, and community.

The 18th annual Vashon-Maury Island Low Tide Celebration is this Sunday, June 14th, from 10 am to 2 pm at Point Robinson Park. It is a chance to experience the wonders of our beautiful island with a very low tide.⁠

The event is the brainchild of Captain Joe Wubbold III. We recently recognized Captain Joe for his Commitment to Vashon History at our Celebrate Our Heritage Gala. ⁠

Congratulations to the graduating Class of 2026; your community is celebrating your accomplishments and looks forward to your future. ⁠

We thought it might be fun to pull out a photo of some of our first high school graduates. This is the Burton High School Graduating Class of 1909. From left to right in the top row are Marjorie Stanley, Rhoda Estella McDonald Stetson, and Cora Turner Dye. Kenneth Van House is on the left and Carl Carslon on the right. ⁠

Burton High School was built in 1903 and 1904, at the Burton Peninsula "Y". Before that time, if you wanted to pursue education beyond eighth grade, you attended Vashon College or went off-island. ⁠

In 1913, two new high schools opened. Vashon High School, the current site of Harbor School and the VES playfields, and another high school in Burton, Burton Union High School, southeast of the Judd Creek Bridge, across the highway from the skate park. It accommodated more students with the unification of the Burton, Maury, and Southern Vashon school districts.⁠

Couldn't pass up the chance to post this 1973 Beachcomber photo.

"Myrtle Walls pins an orchid corsage on Virginia Schwartz (center) while Larry Walls demonstrates his corsage-making talent in preparation for an appearance in the Northwest Orchid Society show in Seattle next week (1973). Walls said his shop, the Wall Flower, was the only retail florist shop invited to demonstrate at the show which opens Sunday, March 25."

Heritage Museum Gala: what a night! We are still catching our breath. You all looked great! Thank you to everyone who joined us: donors, attendees, sponsors, volunteers, The Hardware Store Restaurant team, DJ Prince Voltaire, band Croaker, Jeff Hoyt, Open Space, photographer Helen Stimson, and the FBLA club at VHS.

We LOVE our hard-working committee: Anne Meyers, Bettie Edwards, Cyrus Anderson, Jim Roy, Sue Hardy, and Event Chair, Tom Langland.

They were supported by some of the best volunteers in the business, and we love our Board of Directors! Special thanks to Peter Ray for great behind-the-scenes tech work and Mike Sudduth for always finding the best photos.

So many flags, so many Veterans laid to rest at Vashon Cemetery. Somber reflections and great stories, thanks to all who attended our drizzly cemetery tours. Our great volunteers are preparing for another tour on July 4th. ❤️

Vashon Cemetery Program - 11 am
Heritage Museum Tours - 1 pm and 2:30 pm

Memorial Day is Monday, May 25th, and we’ll be at the Museum and the Cemetery. Have you attended one of our cemetery tours? They are truly an educational experience. Our volunteers are great storytellers; you’ll walk away knowing your community far more deeply. We will be learning about Vashon Veteran Robert Bennedsen, who died in service in Afghanistan, and Donald Holke, who perished in service in Vietnam. We’ll hear about work on the home front during WWII, and we’ll even learn about Vashon Veterans who served during the Civil War. The tours are offered at 1 pm and 2:30 pm at the Vashon Cemetery. The Cemetery Memorial Day program honoring all veterans begins at 11 am.

Also on Memorial Day, the Senior Center is hosting a BBQ in its restored Bacchus Memorial Garden. We are pulling out some lawn games, and the Fire Department is pulling out an engine. 12 - 3 pm. We are usually closed on Mondays, but the Museum will be open for this holiday.
