October Pioneer Spotlight: Jacques Henri Tron

Today, we continue our October Pioneer Spotlight series by remembering Jacques Henri Tron, one of the original settlers who helped establish the town of Valdese.

Jacques Henri Tron was born on December 21, 1848, in Balsille, Massel, Italy. He passed away on November 16, 1907, in White Pine, Tennessee.

In 1893, Jacques Henri was among the first emigrants from the Waldensian valleys of northwest Italy to make the journey to the United States and settle on land designated for the colony in Burke County, North Carolina. The group traveled aboard the SS Zaandam to New York before continuing by rail to their destination, arriving on May 29, 1893.

His wife arrived later, on August 23, 1893, with their daughter, Esther, and sons Emmanuel and Benjamin. Sadly, their son Benjamin passed away on October 19, 1893. Another son, also named Benjamin, and a daughter, Mary Louise, were later born in Valdese.

The Tron family eventually relocated to White Pine, Tennessee, where they made their home. Despite the move, their connection to Valdese remained part of their family’s story, and the family burial plot is located in the Waldensian Cemetery.

Jacques Henri played an important role in the early development of the colony. He was appointed as one of the master masons during the construction of the Waldensian church. He also helped build the community’s first communal oven, where residents could bake their bread, and served on the colony’s Board of Directors.

From helping build the church to contributing to the everyday life and leadership of the growing community, Jacques Henri Tron helped lay the foundation for the town we know and love today.

Join us throughout October as we continue remembering the men and women whose courage, hard work, and determination helped establish Valdese. Their stories are an important part of our shared history and heritage.

October Pioneer Spotlight: Jaubert & Jeanne Micol

Today, we continue our October Pioneer Spotlight as we look back on the lives of two more of Valdese’s original settlers, Jaubert Micol and his wife, Jeanne, née Tron.

The Micol family came from Massel, Prali, Italy, in the Waldensian Valleys and were part of the first contingent of Waldensian immigrants who left their homeland for a new life in America.
The family departed from Turin, Italy, traveling to Boulogne-sur-Mer, France. After waiting six days, they boarded the SS Zaandam, arriving in New York on May 26, 1893. From there, they continued their journey by steamer and rail, finally reaching Burke County, North Carolina, on May 29, 1893.
Jaubert Micol quickly became an important figure in the affairs of the young colony. He served on the Board of Directors of the Valdese Corporation and became known as the “King” because he was the first adult to step off the train when the settlers arrived in Burke County.
Jaubert Micol and Ippolyte Salvageot also shared the distinction of being the first two Vaudois immigrants to become naturalized American citizens.

Behind the history of Valdese are the stories of families like the Micol family—people who left behind their homeland, traveled thousands of miles, and took a leap of faith to build a new community here.
Their journey became part of our story, and their legacy remains part of Valdese today.

Stay tuned throughout October as we continue introducing you to the pioneers who helped establish the town we call home.

It’s Birthday Week at the Museum!

We have not one, but two birthdays to celebrate this week! Our Executive Director, Gretchen Costner, and Museum Assistant, Katherine Fletcher, are both celebrating another trip around the sun!

As we celebrate, we’re also feeling especially grateful for the opportunity to do what we love—preserving, sharing, and bringing to life the rich history and heritage of the Waldenses for our community and visitors from near and far.

We are so thankful for the continued support of the Waldensian Heritage Foundation and everyone who helps make the work of the museum possible.

Here’s to another year of learning, sharing, preserving, and celebrating our Waldensian heritage!

October Pioneer Spotlight

Throughout the month of October, we’ll be highlighting some of the original settlers of Valdese—the men, women, and families who arrived here on May 29, 1893, with a dream of building a new community they could call home.

Many of these pioneers spent the rest of their lives here and ultimately found their final resting place in the town they helped create.

Today, we begin with Mrs. Catherine Guigou Garrou, a true pioneer of Valdese. She was a loving wife, devoted mother, teacher, and friend whose life helped shape the early Waldensian community.

Her story is one of determination, faith, family, and service—and we’re excited to share more about her remarkable life with you.
