“In retrospect, I owe Diego Maradona a great deal; without him, I would not have had the provenance of a career starting all the way back to that extraordinary World Cup in Mexico in 1986 which he owned, both metaphorically and literally. I got lucky on the day of the final and the photograph of him, arms aloft with the trophy, remains one of the most important of my life.

But Neapolitans had gotten even luckier when their debt-ridden club bought Diego Maradona from Barcelona in the summer of 1984. It was an enormous financial gamble for a club teetering on insolvency and history now looks back fondly on the courage of the owner Corrado Ferlaino.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of Maradona to the city - no sportsman has ever offered such level of redemption and hope to an otherwise disadvantaged community and when Maradona’s Napoli won the Italian title in 1987, his legacy was secure. To this day, many Neapolitans have two paintings above their bed - Jesus Christ and Maradona. It was an intoxicating love affair between man and city masterfully articulated in the Asif Kapadia 2019 documentary “Maradona”, which briefly features my photograph from 1986.

For a generation now, the giant murals of Maradona, dotted around Naples and the neighbouring towns, have become tourist destinations in themselves. They are part of the aesthetic fabric of this most magical and raw part of Europe. Diego was so much more than just a sportsman; he was a modern-day saviour in this god-fearing and deeply spiritual place.

My idea was to use a Maradona mural as a background layer in a celebration of life in the wider Naples area. The styling and props were necessarily skewed towards the time when Maradona still played for Napoli, and I sensed the need for a busy street narrative. I wanted to evoke a very definite sense of place. There is nowhere quite like it in the world.”

“This sculpture’s a pretty classic American story. A guy is working on a ranch, or maybe down in the oil patch. He’s been playing in dives and honkytonks for the tip jar. He’s a pretty good picker, you know. He’s got that kind of whiskey voice the women like and he’s written some tunes people remember and always ask him for. And one day somebody says, ‘You ought to go on down to Austin.” And he thinks, Well, what the hell?’ So he heads out. Catches a bus or bums a ride. Maybe hitchhikes. And he ends up standing at the corner of Sixth Street - which is where all the clubs and studios are - with nothing but his old guitar and a couple bucks in his pocket. He’s there because you can become famous in Austin. You think about the guys whose names we all know, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Holly, Stevie Ray Vaughan ... They all played Austin. So he’s come down to take his shot, too. And right then, right there, man, anything is possible”

“THE LODGE AT VAIL” | by David Yarrow

Edition of 12
Large: 71x86

“The Lodge at Vail was the first proper hotel to operate in a resort that arrived at the Colorado ski party exceptionally late. The first stones of Vail were laid in 1962 making it the new kid on the block versus other Colorado ski towns such as Aspen, Breckenridge, or Steamboat Springs, which existed as 19th century mining towns prior to the establishment of their ski resorts. To begin with, the hotel was a “white elephant”, losing $100,000 every year until the faux Bavarian town matured into something of substance. But to borrow from Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, “If you build it, he will come” and sure enough they came.

The Lodge at Vail became the epicentre of a town that enjoyed growing popularity because of its abundant skiing and ease of travel. The facade of the hotel has not changed much for several decades and I thought I could use that as a backdrop, in much the same way we did at Badrutt’s Palace in St Moritz, Switzerland in 2023. That photograph - which lent on the glamour of the 1970s in the resort - was hugely popular. There was an element of James Bond to it coupled with intense femininity. The formula worked and so this became the prompt for my shot outside the Lodge. After all, Vail became a place to be seen fairly quickly and by the mid 70s it was in vogue.

Bohemian glamour was as prevalent in Colorado as it was in the Swiss Alps, maybe even more so. Who better, therefore, than Alessandra Ambrosio - the Brazilian supermodel - to play he lead in this narrative. She has such presence and authority and is a joy to work with. We would also like to thank Austin Akers for the use of the beautiful 1956 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing“

“El Toro” | Seville, Spain

“The Miura Cattle Ranch was established in the province of Seville in 1847 and is part
of Spanish national heritage. Tradition has it that bulls of the Miura breed are the most dangerous and the lineage is revered for being large, fierce and cunning.

The ranch was originally owned by Don Eduardo Miura Fernandez and his descendants still have ownership of this fabled place. It was a visit to the Muira ranch that inspired Ferruccio Lamborghini to make a bull the symbol of his industrial empire and in his novel Death in the Afternoon, Ernest Hemingway wrote glowingly about the strain of bulls raised by Don Eduardo Miura’s sons.

We were introduced to one of the most revered of the matadors in Spain - Eduardo Davila Miura - who, of course, is another descendant of Don Eduardo Miura. Wandering around the inner streets of Seville with Eduardo and sampling Bourdain’s favoured tapas bars, was akin to walking down the King’s Road with David Beckham. I was left in no doubt that he is a national treasure.

The ranch workers were fastidious on my safety and that of the bull we photographed that day. I am so pleased that they are delighted with the result. It was not a normal morning and this was certainly not a normal bull. It was all quite terrifying but I would stress that I was working with the best ranchers in the business. This is not something to go and try in a nearby field.

It is said that to understand Andalusia, a visitor must know a little about the Spanish Civil War and a little about its history with bulls. I certainly know more now about both than I did a week ago”

“TOMBSTONE” by Gib Singleton

It’s a scene imagined by scores of historians, fiction writers, artists and movie buffs and one depicted often on canvas and film: Doc Holliday and Virgil, Wyatt and Morgan Earp walking down Fremont Street in wild and woolly Tombstone, Arizona Territory, on October 26, 1881, moments before the legendary Gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

World-renowned artist Gib Singleton felt compelled to capture that moment in time—but in his own way, in a namesake sculpture (above) full of what he calls “emotional realism.”

Thank you to for sharing this stunning installation shot!

Installation | Rolling Stones

“I had my chance late one afternoon in January 2023, but almost all of my images in that five minutes of chaos were cluttered and messy, as is often the case with untamed horses. Images of single mustangs were easier but were never going to cut it as the essence of the place is the collective. It is an extraordinary spectacle when they move as one.

But luckily, and it was luck, one split second offered the chance to embody everything I could have wished for and just a little bit more. Not an easy capture and a test of quick thinking in the field. I can almost hear the pounding of the hoofs when I look at it.

After some deliberation on what to call this big picture, I went for the Rolling Stones, for reasons that don’t really need to be explained.” - David Yarrow
