Join us at the Briscoe-Garner Museum on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 from 4:30 PM-6:00 PM for a special community reading of the Declaration of Independence. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and take part in a nationwide, simultaneous reading of the Declaration of Independence, brought to life by costumed performers! Enjoy complimentary hot dogs and a watermelon ice cream bar.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Four days later, on July 8, it was read aloud to the public for the first time. Now, nearly 250 years later, Americans across all 50 states and 16 territories will come together on July 8, 2026, to read the Declaration of Independence—united across thousands of miles and nine time zones. You won't want to miss this historic event!

In observance of Independence Day, the Briscoe‑Garner Museum will be closed on July 4 so our staff can celebrate the holiday with family and friends. 5. District of Columbia Suffrage Act, 1867
The District of Columbia Suffrage Act granted voting rights to all males over the age of 21 in the District of Columbia. The privilege was denied to "welfare or charity cases, those under guardianship, those convicted of major crimes and those who had voluntarily sheltered Confederate troops or spies during the Civil War.” The law had no race-based restrictions, making it the first law passed in the U.S. guaranteeing African Americans the right to vote in public elections. (Thanks to Sam Rayburn Museum for this informative America 250 exhibit.)
