Saturday, April 20th is Great American Cleanup Day in Utica. The Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley has always done its part since before the Center was open, cleaning up the site and the streets around us (Spring, Cooper, Varick and Huntington). We're looking for dozen or so people to meet at the Center at 11 AM on Saturday (the City is supplying bags and gloves, but if you want to bring something -- like grabbers -- feel free). Besides keeping this swell planet clean, we've always timed it so we're done and thirsty at almost exactly the same time that beers are available. Either PM us here, or send an email to [email protected] if you can help us out... and bring a friend!

We're looking for photographs anyone might have of St. Patrick's Church on Columbia St.; either the one that was there from 1894-1966, or of the original church (1850-1889). If you can help us, please send an email to iccmv.museum (at) gmail.com. Thanks!

Hey, have we got any amateur archea... archlog... archiol... people who like to dig up relics? Have we got a job for you! I was looking through a bucket of stuff that was unearthed during the excavation of the land on which the Irish Cultural Center was built -- the same land where the original St. Patrick's Church(es) stood from 1850-1889 and 1894-1968 -- and I found these bottles and shards. I have no idea what they are or how old they are, but it does sound to me like it might make a good volunteer project -- cleaning (carefully), checking for maker's marks, maybe some reconstruction? If interested, contact me at [email protected].

Sunday, April 23rd is Great American Cleanup Day in Utica. We at the Irish Cultural Center have always put together a team of volunteers to clean up the area around the Center and surrounding streets (Huntington, Spring, Cooper and Varick), and we'd like to continue that tradition. We’re looking for a dozen or so people to meet at the Center at 11 AM on Sunday (the City is supplying bags and gloves, etc., but if you want to bring something -- like grabbers -- feel free). Besides keeping this swell planet clean, we've always timed it so we're done and thirsty at almost exactly the same time that beers are available. "A Conversation with Sinn Fein’s Danny Morrison"

Join us for an online conversation, via Zoom, with long-time Irish Republican activist and former Sinn Féin spokesperson Danny Morrison.

Join us on Wednesday April 26 at 6 PM for a Zoom conversation with former Sinn Féin spokesperson Danny Morrison.

Few Irish can forget the Irish Long Kesh Prison hunger strikes of the 1980’s that left an indelible mark on Ireland’s struggle with Great Britain. It was an event that held the world spellbound and would change the face of Irish politics forever cementing Sinn Féin’s standing as a major political party in Ireland.

At the age of 22, Danny Morrison was the editor of the Sinn Féin newspaper, Republican News and later would become editor of An Phoblacht/Republican News. Having served time himself in Long Kesh, he became the spokesperson for Bobby Sands and others during the 1981 hunger strikes which would later that year take the lives of Sands and his comrades. Morrison’s penchant for writing soon led to the publication of several books on the struggles faced at the hands of British oppression.

You can attend this FREE presentation at the Irish Cultural Center’s H.A.R.P. Museum, or view it from the comfort of your own home, by registering with Eventbrite, at https://bit.ly/3M458C6. Once registered, you will be sent the Zoom link.

"Mapping the Erie Canal: The Works of Cartographer David Vaughan"

Historian Craig Williams discusses the 19th century Irish cartographer David Vaughan and his role in the first expansion of the Erie Canal.

Join us at The H.A.R.P. Museum on Sunday April 16 from 2-4 PM for a presentation by retired NYS Historian Craig Williams as he discusses the life and works of 19th Century Irish cartographer David Vaughan.

It is well known that the Irish contributed considerable manual labor to the first enlargement of the Erie Canal in the 1840’s. The labor could not be started, however, without the help of the maps and plans of Irish immigrant David Vaughan. Not only were Vaughan’s maps and drawings invaluable to the construction of the canal enlargement, they could also be considered works of art. The embellishments he used in his maps and drawings often contained minute humorous and cultural elements from his native Ireland. You will find this presentation most informative and you may be in for a surprise or two as you learn about Vaughan’s life.

The presentation will be held at the H.A.R.P. Museum, located on the second floor of the Irish Cultural Center of the Mohawk Valley, 623 Columbia St, Utica, NY. Admission is free but we do ask that you register by visiting EventBrite at https://bit.ly/40qrLVq.

Craig Williams serves on the board of the Canal Society of New York State and speaks regularly on a variety of Erie Canal topics. He retired as a senior historian at the New York State Museum after more than thirty years of service. He is also a former curator at the Erie Canal Museum.

Hey, do we have any armchair sleuths out there? One of our Museum members recently sent this embroidered arm patch from the Utica PD, with a Irish phrase on it (translates to "There is no strength without unity"). Does anyone know, or know anyone in the police department who might know, anything about this patch? Why, when and to whom it was issued? Was it just "merch" that they had made for their members or to sell/collect? Was it part of an actual Irish organization within the police department? We're trying to find out where in our museum it should be displayed. Thanks in advance.

The Irish Cultural Center’s H.A.R.P. Museum – that’s “History, Ancestry, Research and Programs” – is coming along nicely, but there are still a lot of things we need to procure, and bottom line, we don’t have the money to get all that we need. If you would like to help us out financially but don’t have extra money to make a cash donation, there may still be a way for you to put cash in our coffers… at no cost to you!

We, as an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3), are also now registered to take advantage of an incredible opportunity offered by the AmazonSmile Foundation, wherein for every dollar you spend when shopping on Amazon, this foundation will send .05% to our bank account. Now, that may not sound like a lot – for example, if you spend $10, the Museum gets a nickel – but when you consider that the average consumer spends $1000 a year through Amazon, it doesn’t take long to add up. In fact, the AmazonSmile Foundation has already donated over 215 million dollars to charities… that’s a whole lot of nickels! So, what do you need to do?

First, shoppers need to select the charity they wish their purchases to support. Well, we’ve already done that for you. If you click on this link - https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-0477408 – which is specifically unique to our organization, you’re already recognized as having selected the Irish Cultural and Historical Society of the Mohawk Valley as your chosen charity. And to set your regular Amazon shopping session to take advantage of the AmazonSmile money, simply type “smile.” (“smile dot”) in front of “Amazon” in the URL (i.e., www.amazon.com becomes www.smile.amazon.com), and if you bookmark that new URL, you don’t ever need to do that again on subsequent visits. You’ll know you’re connected to Amazon Smile because the banner at the top of your page will now say “Supporting: Irish Cultural…” And again, there are no fees added to your purchase; all the money comes from the AmazonSmile Foundation. Do it today, and tell your friends and family to do it as well, and send them our unique link.
