"We cannot achieve a healthier us without achieving a healthier, more equitable health care system, and ultimately, a more equitable society," ~ Helen Rodríguez-Trias

Helen is one of the many subjects of Julie Lapping Rivera's portraiture series currently on display in our exhibition "Look Again: Portraits of Daring Women."

Helen was the first Latina president of the American Public Health Association. She advocated for better public health servies for women of color, low-income people, and people with HIV/AIDS; worked to expand access to abortion; and spoke out against forced sterilization. Born to Puerto Rican parents and growing up in both Puerto Rico and New York, her personal experiences focused her attention on the ways poverty, inequality, and racism led to poor health. In 2001, she received the Presidential Citizen's Medal, the second-highest civilian award in the United States.

Hear from Julie about her work and the women she depicted this Thursday, 6pm PCT, with our virtual program. She will be joined by Amy Padnani, Amy Padnani, creator of the The New York Time's "Overlooked" series which inspired Julie.
