Our volunteers are an essential part of the museum! They give tours of Grace's home the Sun House, lead field trip activities, staff our Gift Store, take care of our gardens, assist with collections, and help install exhibitions.

Whether you love to talk to people...or don't, there are lots of options to volunteer. Stop in at the front desk for a volunteer application or give us a call to learn more.

We're sad to see "Momím Wené: Medicine Water" return home, but excited for our next exhibition "Look Again: Portraits of Daring Women." The exhibition opens May 23 and we hope you'll join us for the opening reception on June 5, from 5-8pm!

The exhibition highlights the stories of women like fearless tiger trainer Mabel Stark and African American jounalist Ida B Wells. Artist Julie Lapping Rivera was inspired by The New York Times "Overlook" series which shares the stories of those who were often forgetten.

Along with Julie's woodcut and collage portraits of women featured in this show from Exhibit Envoy, we'll also be featuring over 15 Mendocino County artists. Their quilts, paintings, prints, photographs, and drawings highlight their grandmothers, local women of note, and women from different times and places.

Did you know there are works available like these obsidian knives from Steven Saffold (Coastal Chumash) in our current exhibition "Momím Wené: Medicine Water" that are available for sale? Just ask at the front desk to find out which ones.

Steven shares about these pieces, "Obsidian was a prized trade item for my ancestors. We were coastal people, but would trade with other tribes to access this precious material. Our shell bead money and abaloneshells would make their wayacross the Santa Barbara channel with our Tomols (redwood plank canoes), and would be traded all across the southwest. The obsidian from Coso range has been found on our Channel Islands, which shows the vast trade network that once existed adn relied heavily on our coastal resources."

Make sure to check out "Momím Wené: Medicine Water" this weekend, the last weekend the exhbibition will be open where you can see these beautiful works among many others.

Anthony Burris (Ione Band of Miwok Indians), says about his piece on the left, "This necklace and earring set represents the movement of water. The colors, the whites, the blacks, the various shades of blue, demonstrate the way that the color of water changes with the rapid movement of rising and falling, or with stillness and depth. Abalone is included as it comes from the ocean. The thickness of the neckless and earrings represent the vast volume of water in our environment."

Delana Galvan (El Dorado Band of Miwok Indians" says of her piece on the right, "As women it is our culural responsibility to caretake our water. She is a sacred element that gives life and connects all two and four legged beings together. Our Ancestors lived off of the animals and the plants that were maintained by the river ecosystems. Our sons and stories are tied to the rivers and oceans and our historical way of life are preserved within them.

Inspired by nature and culture I weave together the past and present to create handmade regalia and jewelry of modern day. It is an honor to know the land and our place in it. Recognizin the traditional resources, gathering in a respectful manner, centering thoughts and intentions in a good way to create beautiful pieces that reflect our relations, our culture, and our ways."
