Today in Tulsa History!

In June 1944, thousands of Tulsans gathered downtown for the War Show Parade as part of the Fifth War Bond Drive. The event featured military displays, patriotic marches, Civil Defense volunteers, and community celebrations designed to encourage support for the war effort.

Before factories and modern machines, textiles were created one thread at a time.

This historic floor loom on display in the exhibit “Home and Hearth” offers a glimpse into the craftsmanship and daily labor that helped shape everyday life in earlier generations.

Black Oklahomans have been celebrating since before the city of Tulsa was incorporated. Many brought their festivities with them when migrating to Indian Territory in the late 1800s. Today we all come together to celebrate the ending of slavery in the United States.

Below are photos of a prosperous Greenwood District, rebuilt following the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre.

Today in Tulsa History…

Amelia Earhart came to visit!

On June 18, 1931, the famed aviator visited Tulsa Municipal Airport to demonstrate an autogiro, an innovative aircraft that combined a rotor and propeller. Hundreds gathered to watch as Earhart performed a series of ascents and descents, showcasing the aircraft’s unique capabilities.

Earhart’s visit was part of a nationwide tour testing the autogiro, but her time in Tulsa was extended when the aircraft required repairs before continuing its journey. She even visited the Hull family at the mansion next door, now the Tulsa Garden Center at Woodward Park.

As part of the current exhibit “Home and Hearth,” visitors have shared recipes that connect them to family traditions, childhood memories, and cultures from around the world. Together, these recipe cards have become a reminder that food is often one of the strongest connections we have to home.

In June 15th, 1957, Tulsans gathered for Tulsarama!, a citywide celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of Oklahoma statehood. Events included parades, special exhibits, community gatherings, and even the burial of a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in a time capsule.
