Today in Tulsa History...

On this day in 1985, the Greenwood Cultural Center was dedicated in Tulsa. Established to preserve, promote, and celebrate African American culture and heritage, the Center has become an enduring cornerstone of the Greenwood District and a place where stories, resilience, and achievements of the community continue to be shared with future generations.

These photographs capture moments from the dedication ceremony, marking the beginning of a new chapter in preserving Greenwood’s rich history and legacy.

New donation!

Oil painting on panel by Tulsa artist Jose Alfredo "Pepe" Mendez (1927-1994). The image depicts two roosters in a cockfight.

Pepe Mendez was born in Havana, Cuba and graduated art school from San Alejandro University in Havana. Mendez later joined the opposition forces to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. He escaped Cuba and settled in Tulsa, OK, in 1963. Mendez taught numerous art classes in the Tulsa area for many years, including those at Tulsa Junior College. He died in 1994 in Hollandale, FL.

Today in Tulsa History...

On August 18, 1967, The Monkees brought their tour to the Tulsa Assembly Center, performing for fans in one of the biggest concerts of the summer. While visiting Tulsa, the band also caught a movie at the Orpheum Theatre and spent the night on the 11th floor of the historic Mayo Hotel.

Today in Tulsa History...

On August 14, 1919, Tulsa celebrated its first interstate air freight shipment to Kansas City. Pilot J.V.C. Gregory flew 125 pounds of Hofstra insecticide aboard a Curtiss biplane, reaching Kansas City in just three and a half hours.

New donation!

Early Art Deco Porcelain Compote Bowl, c. 1918. Manufactured by Oscar and Edgar Gutherz in Bohemia, this bowl is from the company's "Royal Austria" line, made of premium porcelain with hand-painted patterns and gold gilding.

Archival Spotlight:

Map of the Creek and Seminole Nations with color-coded classification, c. 1900.

The map contains section lines, township and range indications, railroads, creeks and rivers, towns, ferries, and landmarks such as courthouses. It uses color-coding to assign classification for land type.

For the Creek Nation, the map delineates 2,157,613 acres of agricultural land, 215,680 acres of rocky prairie land, 618,240 acres of hilly and rocky land, and 81,280 acres of mountain land.

For the Seminole Nation, the map delineates 24,055 acres of first-class land, 248,838 acres of second-class land, and 92,961 acres of third-class land.

The purpose of the map was to aid the allotment process by identifying different types of land within these two nations.

On July 25, 1961, a German Shepherd named Lance made history at Harvey Young Airport in Tulsa when he became the first civilian dog to complete a parachute jump.

Lance jumped (was pushed) from an airplane approximately 2,000 feet above the city. He floated down under a twenty-four-foot parachute and landed safely but off course, slightly west of the airport.

These photographs capture various creations by Tulsans created for Tulsa’s annual sandcastle competition on July 23, 1977. For years, Tulsans gathered along the riverbank to showcase their creativity transforming ordinary sand into works of art.
