Opened in 2018, the Vintage Sewing Center and Museum is a “hands-on” museum with more than 700 antique and vintage sewing machines and their accessories on display. We stock thread, fabric, notions - everything our visitors need to experience the thrill of sewing.*
The Museum is set up for self-guided tours, although we encourage visitors to sign up for a guided tour by our Curator who will take you on a journey through the years, telling stories not only about the machines in our collection, but the people who used them. From the earliest delicate chainstitchers to massive military industrials, sewing machines have played a role in all our lives. You will learn how sewing machines affected and influenced our history, especially women’s.
A self-guided tour is $10 per person and you may wander at your leisure; a guided tour is $20 per person and includes at least one hour of a guided tour then you may wander at your leisure. Children under 15 are free with the purchase of a corresponding adult ticket.
Walk through our beautiful, custom-made arbor into our first room containing over 250 machines (several of them rare). The magic of the Museum is that it is bigger than it appears from the outside. You will find multiple themed rooms on several floors (including a special children’s room for the young (and young at heart), hand-painted murals, and plenty of surprises. Gasps and “Oh, wow!” are commonly heard at our Museum.
In addition to being a hands-on Museum, we are also a sewing and repair center. We offer one-on-one or group sewing and repair lessons and workshops (learn to maintain and repair your machine). The Museum has thousands of “Service Manuals “ of all types for patrons’ use. We also have onsite machine maintenance and repair by an experienced mechanic. We will make housecalls if you are unable to bring your machine to us. We can also provide loaner machines if your machine repair requires more than a few hours and we have rental machines available. We also offer custom-designed top-quality sewing machine repainting or, if you prefer, restore your machine to “factory-new” with an original color repaint.
Our Museum’s main objectives are preserving the history and sentiment that comes with saving “Grandma’s machine,” teaching the history of sewing and how the development of the sewing machine revolutionized the art, and keeping the art of sewing (and fix-it-yourself skills) alive by introducing children (and adults) to the joy of “making it yourself.” To foster this goal, there is no admission fee for children under 15 with the purchase of an adult ticket.
Our Museum has a 100% kid-approval rating. We frequently host scouting groups, 4-H Clubs, and children’s birthday parties. We can also host quilting parties, ladies’ sewing nights (and teas), church groups, bus tours and car shows (our parking lot is immense!) - if you have ever dreamed of hosting a get-together in a unique and fun location, we are the place!
Donations to the Museum related to sewing culture are greatly appreciated as it is vital for us to provide a complete representation of the vast diversity that exists of this wonderful art. We also appreciate monetary gifts to help defray the cost of operating expenses.
There is a “sister” page to our Museum (the “M” as we call it): https://www.facebook.com/groups/407787369596207/ . On this page you will find a pictorial of the beginnings of the M, converse with members who have been involved with the M from the start, fun contests with prizes, and a welcoming atmosphere that just feels like home.
Our Museum (and associated Facebook group) do not do appraisals (there are too many factors that affect a machine’s value (basically, a machine is worth what someone will pay)), nor do we allow selling of machines on our pages.
Museum operating hours: Thursday - Saturday 10 am - 6 pm. Please call to schedule by-appointment-only tours outside of normal operating hours or for special events or large groups (ask about special rates for children’s events and large groups). We try to accommodate as many special requests as possible.
*Due to the rarity of some machines, supervision by Museum staff is required during visitor use.
