As Living Arts moved into the late 80s and early 90s, we saw change in our leadership. Franklin Wassmer, a dancer with the Tulsa Ballet and an active member of Living Arts and our Education program, stepped in as Administrative President of Living Arts as Virigina Myers's health waned, and he was a guiding force for the organization as Steve Ligget joined the organization in the early 90s. Virigina Myers passed around this time, and her impact and mission have been carried foward throughout the years, and our Myers gallery is named in her honor. As we entered the 90s and approached the change in millennium, Living Arts also approached an era of experimentation.

Lindsey Cox is the creative force behind the OKC-based Art punk band, stepmom. She wears many hats as a visual artist, musician, director, producer, talent booker and events producer at Factory Obscura, and host of "Lindsey's Lounge" on KOSU/The Spy. Advocating for the local music community is at the core of Lindsey's many endeavors.

Artist Statement: "My goal is to be unruly in my art and in everyday life.

Growing up with certain experiences and expectations, I process my upbringing through a unique lens, hoping it resonates with others and makes them feel less alone in their own journeys. I am on a path of unlearning toxic patriarchal gender norms and unsustainable capitalistic ideas of success.

What does unlearning patriarchal and capitalist ideas of gender and productivity look like? How do we reclaim the time stolen by capitalism? What does it feel like to shed toxic gender norms by redefining them to reflect our own identities? How can we, as a society, adopt a more fluid and less rigid worldview?

These are the questions my art explores.

My art delves into the cognitive dissonance we experience under late-stage capitalism and between societal expectations (being perpetual consumers) and what truly matters (sustainability, community). It is a love letter to the vibrant worlds created by P*e Wee’s Playhouse, Austin’s whimsical art rock scene, the Riot Grrrl movement, Australian installation artist Pip & Pop, Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novels, and the British surrealist web series Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared.

Through stepmom, I have ventured into music, film direction and production, stop-motion animation, stage prop design, and costume design. My partnership with Factory Obscura allowed me to bring my love of immersive installation art into the stepmom realm, expanding on the characters and themes in our music. The stepmom immersive experience lets me explore new dimensions of my creative world and engage new audiences.

I label my art as “conscious escapism.” While I want listeners and participants to immerse themselves in the stepmom realm, my intention is to spark a flame in people to imagine a world where we value community, activism, and feeling safe in our own bodies over commodification.

What would the world look like if more people made the outside world reflect the vibrant worlds in their minds?

I believe there is a source of energy all around us. By tuning into the right frequency, we can let this source flow through us. We are in a moment of cultural upheaval and disillusionment, with many questioning their reality and the roles they've been expected to play for decades. stepmom allows me to process and dissect the elements that distort, manipulate, and exploit everyday people."

stepmom is an art punk band from Oklahoma City. With dreamy harmonies, ambient cello and synth contrasted with angsty guitar riffs and powerful lead vocals, stepmom represents the feeling of disillusionment among many who are trying to survive in late-stage capitalism.

stepmom is the creative brainchild of lead singer/guitarist, Lindsey Cox with musical collaborators Cheyenne McCoy on bass/cello, Amie Reardon on drums/oboe, and Bailey Pelletier on synth.

stepmom lives in the ethereal musical realm, but it also bleeds into the physical realm in the form of collage art, stop motion, stage props, costume design, backup dancers, and the Profitopia immersive art experience. No matter how the art is expressed, stepmom dissects and critiques patriarchal and capitalist ideas of femininity, productivity, and consumerism while promoting community and activism.
