The Overfield Tavern Museum The Overfield Tavern Museum, Troy's original gathering place

Temporarily closed Once a Frontier Tavern . . .

The tavern was the center of activities in the small settlement community of Troy, Ohio. It was the place to meet area residents and travelers, to find society, comfortable lodging, and good food and drink. Until 1811 the County Court met in an upstairs room of the tavern. The tavern also housed the local Masonic Lodge, one of the first in the state of Ohio.

Do you have any scraps of wood lying around that you could donate to TTHS for a historical craft project?

The Troy Historical Society is looking for flat scraps of wood that measure about 6 to 8 inches square. We will be using these for upcoming events where kids will have the opportunity to make a punched tin ornament using a hammer and nail. Please let us know if you have any scraps you are willing to share!

What do you remember about the The Overfield School back when it was housed at the Overfield Tavern Museum?

Members of The Troy Historical Society's executive committee had the honor on May 1 of presenting Julia Hobart, founder of the Overfield School, with the school's original sign, believed to have been crafted shortly after the school opened at the Overfield Tavern in 1960. The school operated out of the Overfield Tavern until 1989, when it relocated to its current campus on Ridge Avenue. The sign, however, remained at the Overfield Tavern Museum for another 37 years. During much of that time, it was on display. Thankfully, the sign was in the process of being prepared to be gifted to Mrs. Hobart and the school and was not in its customary place when fire severely damaged the museum in December 2024. As a result, the sign survived, though the fire singed it slightly. Pictured here are (l-r) Chris Manning, executive director of TTHS; Ben Sutherly, TTHS board president; Julia Hobart; and TTHS executive committee members Martin Stewart and Judy Deeter. We are delighted that the original sign has been reunited with the school, and that Mrs. Hobart could be on hand for the historic occasion.

We thoroughly enjoyed Ohio Valley Archaeology, Inc.’s presentation on last fall’s dig at the Overfield Tavern at today’s Ohio Archaeological Council Spring Meeting, held at the Ohio History Connection in Columbus. Nearly 40 people attended, with even more watching online. We’re excited to bring OVAI to Troy this summer for a similar presentation. Wait until you see the images on some of the sherds! ❤️❤️❤️ 🪏 🪏 🪏
