Come kick off fall with us! We’re excited to revisit the textile era of the Upstate with Dr. Bill Cashion, with a focus on sports during that time.

Dr. Cashion is a pastor, missionary, educator, and community leader whose ministry has spanned more than four decades and six continents.

In addition to his ministry work, Dr. Cashion is an active member of the Greenville Textile Heritage Board. We are honored to welcome Dr. Bill Cashion as our speaker, sharing all things sports in the textile world.

We love our covered bridge and that this story lives on in Echoes, too!

We’ve got the collection (minus a few that are needing reprints) at the History Museum of Travelers Rest

Campbell’s covered bridge is the last remaining 20th century covered bridge in South Carolina. In a 1988 Echoes publication, Furman Suddeth provided some first-hand history of the building. He recounted that C.I. Willis was the contractor and it originally had a shingle roof. He said the bridge was moved to where it now stands and that there previously was a different bridge where it stands now. He said that many say that it was built in 1909, but he remembers a 1911 date because his father cut and sawed the lumber used to build it. It’s named for Alexander Lafayette Campbell, the land owner of the adjoining property. It was restored in 1964, but in subsequent decades declined again and was defaced with graffiti, which we can see in this photo. Vehicle traffic stopped on it in 1984, it was restored again in 1990, became a Greenville County park in 2008, and put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

A lifelong advocate for sports ministry, Dr. Cashion has served as a baseball chaplain with professional teams in both the United States and Venezuela, most recently with the Greenville Drive. He has also served as pastor of churches across the Carolinas and Georgia and is a former adjunct professor of evangelism and missions at North Greenville University.

We are honored to welcome Dr. Bill Cashion as our speaker, sharing all things sports in the textile world.
