Join us for our Art Tank and help decide which artwork will become part of Picker Art Gallery's permanent collection!

Students in ARTH/MUSE 254 “How to Buy a Work of Art” have examined hundreds of artworks for sale in New York City and narrowed their selection down to a final four. Now it is your turn to be part of the process! Come hear their pitches, engage with the works, and vote for your favorite piece. The winning artwork will be purchased and added to the Picker’s collection.

This event will take place on April 30th from 5:00 to 6:30 PM in Bernstein Hall. Student presentations on the four final artworks begin at 5:00 PM, voting opens at 5:45 PM, voting closes at 6:15 PM, and the winning artwork will be announced at 6:30 PM.

We hope to see you there!

Art purchase is supported by the Hilda and Oscar Lasdon Art Acquisition Endowment, established by Elizabeth S. Lasdon ’76.

Serene, macabre, and scientific—all words that describe the wide array of works produced by Lee Brown Coye, an artist whose work is now featured at a special exhibition at the Destiny USA Mall in Syracuse. The model featured in the exhibition, "The Blue Whale Coffee House," is inspired by the coffee houses of colonial New England and New York.

In the fall, Oscar Brown ‘26 dove into Coye’s world of art, operating as the Research Lead for the exhibition. He worked closely with archives in the Onondaga Historical Society and Colgate’s Special Collections and University Archives to unravel the artist, his work, and the mysteries of “The Blue Whale Coffee House.”

Coye, who worked in Hamilton and spent much time on Colgate's campus, was a Central New York-born artist who today is remembered for his macabre illustrations for prominent horror stories, yet throughout his career depicted the history and culture of Central New York. Coye’s “The Blue Whale Coffee House” is now on display through a collaborative effort by Picker Art Gallery, the Onondaga Historical Association, and Syracuse University. Student curator tours of Talk soon, America take place at 2 p.m. on February 20; March 6 and 27; April 11 and 17; and May 1 and highlight the voices and perspectives of the seven student curators behind the spring exhibition at Picker Art Gallery.

Drawing from the collections of the Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology, the exhibition examines the complex legacy of the United States, including the foundational ideas shaping national identity, the relationships and sense of belonging formed within American communities, and the ways the land has shaped and been shaped by its inhabitants. Conceived as a correspondence with the nation, Talk soon, America asks a central question on the eve of the United States’ 250th year: what does it mean to be living in the United States today?

We hope you will join us for a tour!

Join us Thursday, February 12 from 4:30-6:00 PM at Picker Art Gallery (2nd floor of the Dana Arts Center) for the opening reception of our new exhibition Talk soon, America: Letters to a land of promise and paradox. Food and refreshments will be provided!

This year, the United States of America recognizes the semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Institutions across the country—from federal museums to small-town libraries—will commemorate the occasion in different ways, each telling a story about the United States. How should the tale of this nation be told? Is “America” a place or an idea? What or who is an “American” in 2026? In this exhibition, seven student curators set out to investigate the complex legacy of the United States and to contribute their narrative. Drawing from collections of Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology, the exhibition examines some of the foundational concepts on which the nation and its identity have been built, the relationships and sense of belonging that form within American communities, and to how the land itself has shaped—and been shaped by—its inhabitants. Talk soon, America is conceived as a correspondence with the nation, a letter asking for answers to the question: what does it mean to be living in the United States on the eve of its 250th year?

On view from February 12-May 3, 2026.
