On September 29, 1778, Col. Thomas Hartley and his men were making their way south after their expedition through the northern Pennsylvania frontier when they came under a major attack near Indian Hill.

Exhausted and running low on supplies, Hartleyโ€™s force fought off the attack and continued south toward the Wyoming Valley. The Battle of Indian Hill became the final major engagement of Hartleyโ€™s 1778 expedition.

The first battle reenactment of today takes place around 11am! This battle isnโ€™t about one specific battle but will portray the type of fighting Hartleyโ€™s men encountered along the Pennsylvania frontier during his 1778 expedition.

๐’๐ค๐ข๐ซ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐…๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ž๐ซ:

In September 1778, Col. Thomas Hartley led approximately 200 Continental soldiers and Pennsylvania militia north from Fort Muncy into the wilderness of what is now Bradford County.

Unlike the large, organized battles often associated with the American Revolution, warfare on Pennsylvaniaโ€™s frontier frequently consisted of sudden encounters, ambushes and small skirmishes along narrow trails and isolated settlements. Hartleyโ€™s expedition encountered this type of resistance as it pushed north through the region.

๐“๐ก๐ž ๐‘๐š๐ข๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ž๐ž๐ง ๐„๐ฌ๐ญ๐ก๐ž๐ซโ€™๐ฌ ๐•๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š๐ ๐ž

On September 27, 1778, Col. Thomas Hartley and his Continental troops reached Queen Estherโ€™s Town, a Native settlement associated with Esther Montour during their expedition through the Pennsylvania frontier.

The village stood near Tioga Point, along the Chemung River. Today, this historic area is near Athens, Pennsylvania, at the confluence of the Chemung and Susquehanna Rivers.

Hartleyโ€™s troops destroyed the village and surrounding settlements before beginning their journey south. The raid was part of the violent frontier warfare that swept through this region during the American Revolution and followed the Battle of Wyoming earlier that summer.
