Dear Artists
The Torrance Art Museum is developing a new series of exhibitions - and we need your input!
The Ask is this: ask artists what themes THEY want to see addressed in museum exhibitions. What conceptual ideas and themes do you think need addressing at institutional level?
The Plan is: We are going to build this experimental series by asking YOU what is important. We will then select a few artists who will be included in the final shows (in 2008/9) and together, in collaboration with TAM staff, we will refine, clarify and develop an exhibition with those initial artists - who will have equal input into the selection of the rest of the participating artists, mission statement of the exhibition, directions in which the project develops, etc.
Being an artist-centric museum is great but we feel the process is due for a refurbishment that brings artists to the table in deciding what this museum should do to reflect their needs and interests. It won't cover everyone's ideas but we hope to make the program more inline with what artists want. Exhibitions at TAM are and always have been, after all, a collaboration but now we want to make that more explicit.
