General Dwight D. Eisenhower is seen at the podium in this June 1952 photo. He spoke to a crowd in his hometown of Abilene (Dickinson County) after his retirement from active military service in 1952. Eisenhower served as the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during World War II. He oversaw the planning and ex*****on of the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944, which ultimately led to victory in Europe. He served two terms as president of the United States from 1953 to 1961.
