Cyrus Leland, Jr. is seen in this circa 1912 photo after a successful fishing trip. He came to Kansas in 1858 and was appointed as a lieutenant with Company F of the Tenth Kansas Infantry. Leland served in the Kansas legislature from 1865 to 1866 and again from 1903 to 1907. He operated a store in Troy (Doniphan County) in 1866 and served many years as county commissioner. Thanks to Senator Elaine Bowers and Representative Troy Waymaster for taking the time to tour our KATP Field School yesterday with Executive Director Patrick Zollner and State Archeologist Nikki Klarmann! They got to see the site of a crashed B-29 Bomber, historic farmstead, petroglyphs, and our lab where artifacts are being cleaned and documented. Join us tonight for Museum After Hours! A panel of area journalists will explore what journalists today can still learn from William Allen White's success, as well as what's needed from the public to revive rural journalism. The museum will be open during this time from 5-8 p.m. and admission will be free. The program starts at 6:30. This presentation will be offered in a hybrid format with options to livestream it on the KSHS YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/kansashistorical) or attend in-person at the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka.

Henry Leavenworth was a prominent military figure in the early 19th century. He served as an officer during the War of 1812 and led the first military expeditions into the Midwest. In 1819, he established Fort Snelling in Minnesota, and in the early 1820s commanded the garrison at Fort Atkinson in present-day Nebraska. On May 8, 1827, Leavenworth established Cantonment Leavenworth (later to be renamed Fort Leavenworth) on the banks of the Missouri River. The town of Leavenworth, named after General Leavenworth, was founded in 1854. See this photo at www.kansasmemory.gov/item/821

Job opening: The Kansas State Historical Society is seeking a part time seasonal staff member to support existing full-time staff at Hollenberg Pony Express Station State Historic Site in Hanover, Kansas. Hollenberg Station is located on the historic Oregon, California, Pony Express Trails and the newly designated Pony Express Historic Byway. The station served as a stop on these trails as the United States expanded westward. Duties include opening and closing the historic site, providing guided tours, greeting and orienting guests for their self-guided tour, processing retail sales and light janitorial work. The former Marymount College in Salina (Saline County) is seen in this circa 1940 photo. The four-year liberal arts college opened in 1922 as a women's college then extended enrollment to men in 1968. The college was forced to close in June 1989 due to declining student enrollment, and the campus now houses the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Center.
