Welcome to a glimpse of the life of painter Michael Gibbons, his myth and his voice. A native Oregonian, born and raised in Portland, Michael Gibbons demonstrated an extraordinary gift for perception and visual expression. "Like many of my dedicated artist friends, what I was to do with my life was apparent to me as far back as I can remember. It wasn't until my early twenties that inquisitiveness

As we celebrated the New Year here in Toledo during First Weekend, the Yaquina River Museum of Art was in its final installment of the annual "Promise" Christmas Show. Chairwoman of the Board Judith Gibbons gave an art talk on her personal collection of Latin American art, and Reverend Pauline Morrison presented a talk on "Our Venerable Lady of Korsun" an icon in Morrison's personal collection written by Sherry Lynch. Morrison and Gibbons generously loaned pieces from their personal collections in the exhibition.

Recently, the the Giustina Gallery at Oregon State University's LaSells Stewart Center generously sent us these two wonderful photos of Michael. The first is a picture of Michael in discussion with Brian Ferriso, Director of the Portland Art Museum. The second is a picture of Michael with John Olbrantz, the Hallie Ford Museum's Director, after one of Michael's paintings was selected as an addition to the Museum's collection.

This time of year is often an opportunity for families and friends to spend time together. It is also a time of year that many find difficult with the shorter days and colder nights. However this season impacts you, it can be a time of contemplation and reflection - a time to see the light shining through. Although secured in the poppy fields of summer, we think of the meditative women tending to their work in "Wistful Interlude" this winter evening. We are wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season with hope and joy for today and all days ahead.
