The oil boom started underground, but it quickly moved beyond that.

Once oil came out of the hills and valleys of northwestern Pennsylvania, it had to move. Barrels traveled by wagon. Boats carried crude down Oil Creek when the water was high enough. But if oil was going to become part of a national industry, it needed something larger. It needed railroads.

Our newest From the Archive blog post, β€œThe Oil Region On Track,” explores how railroads helped transform Oil City into a place of movement, connection, arrival, and departure.

Tracks, bridges, tunnels, stations, freight yards, passengers, workers, mail, baggage, and oil all became part of the city’s story.

The oil boom made Venango County famous for what came out of the ground. The railroads helped decide where that oil could go.
