Happy Juneteenth!! While the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865—more than two years later—that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure all enslaved people were finally freed. This important day reminds all of us of the continuous fight for freedom and equality.

THIS SATURDAY, June 20th, we will be hosting local author Cynthia Friend Crytzer at Historic Pithole City! Crytzer will present at 1 PM on her book, A Civil War Husband, a compilation of letters written by her great-great grandfather, Thomas D. Nelson, while he fought in the Civil War. She will also be at the Pithole site between 11 AM and 3 PM to sign copies of her book and talk to visitors.

The presentation is included with admission to the Pithole Visitor Center. For more info contact Drake Well Museum at 814-827-2797. See you on Saturday!

We are excited to share the summer schedule for Tarbell House and the Coal Oil Johnny House!! Both sites are owned and operated by our friends at the Oil Region Alliance. Be sure to visit them this summer!

Summer is here—and so is our 2026 Summer Schedule at the Tarbell House!

Every Wednesday in July and August, the Tarbell House will be open from 2 – 4 p.m. for self-guided tours! The cost is $5/adult, $3/child (3-18 years old), and FREE for Children 3 yrs. and under.

If you happen to be taking a train ride on the Oil Creek and Titusville Railroad on any of these dates, consider stopping by after your travels!

The Coal Oil Johnny House will also be open on these dates from 12 – 1 p.m. at the train’s halfway point for free. All are welcome to explore the historic house!

Everyone had a wonderful time at our Summer Social event yesterday evening, June 11th! The event was exclusive to current members of Friends of Drake Well - one of many benefits to having a membership! Attendees were treated to a Victorian tea party with a special presentation on tea etiquette and social norms from the time period.

Thank you to all who attended and to our volunteers, Sue Ledebur and Cynda Sites, for all their help in making the event a success!
