Origins of the Bay City Pearl and Oyster Music Festival .

In Bay City, from 1936 until 1941, because of little knowledge of, and little local oyster consumption, Hayes Oyster Company put on an annual promotional (free) oyster teed.

In Bay City, on land then called Cooperative Property, between what is now Hayes Oyster Drive and the railroad tracks, were dug two parallel 50-foot-long trenches for the purpose of steaming oysters. The trenches were filled with wood that burned all night. In the early morning the coals from the fire were covered with seaweed, then the oysters were put on top of the seaweed, and the oysters were covered with seaweed where they steamed until the feast began.

The annual feed became very popular, and began drawing crowds of up to 15,000 visitors and developed a carnival atmosphere. By World War II, the festival was no longer hosted.

The Bay City Oyster Festival returned in 2000 and evolved to include community-wide celebrations and now a music festival.

Mr. W.B. Flagg of Bay City, enlisted in the Union Army on December 9, 1863 where he served with the 1st Brigade, 1st Division of the 2nd Corps as a drummer & gunman.

He came across this drum after hearing a rumor about to***co stored in a barn nearby on April 8, 1865. Flagg and his accomplice unknowingly wandered over enemy lines to retrieve the coveted goods when he spotted this drum hanging on a stack of guns outside a Confederate soldier's tent.

Mr. Flagg presented his "spoils of war" to the Tillamoook American Legion Summer 1928, 63 years after its capture.

The drum is now on display in the "From the Archive" exhibit at the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum.

As a reflection for America’s 250th, the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum presents a new exhibit: “From the Archive.”

This exhibit is the second installment of “Searchlight,” a rotating series that highlights military history of Tillamook County. “From the Archive” features artifacts from TCPM'S collection that highlight the various conflicts the U.S. has been involved in over its 250 years.

“From the Archive” opens August 11, 2026 and is expected to be on display for a year.

We will reopened on Saturday at 10 am.
