Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site includes a self-guided interpretive trail and a small, but very informative museum.

Learn about Pueblo life in the 14th century. The museum is open Fridays from 9 am to 3pm. Guided tours are available by appointment. Ancestral Pueblo people occupied the site between A.D. 1313 and 1425. Trail and museum exhibits describe and illustrate how the people lived. Site tours and classroom visits are offered to school and community groups. Books, maps and gifts are available in the gift shops located in our museum and the Sandia Ranger Station. The quarter-mile interpretive trail is ALWAYS open; the museum is open when docents are available, generally on Fridays and Saturdays. Contact information:

It’s harvest time at Tijeras Pueblo. The cotton plant (white bloom) is thriving because it had an early start before being planted in our garden. The growing season is too short for cotton to ripen otherwise. The people of Tijeras Pueblo had to trade for cotton with villages in other areas.

The chocolate flower, or chocolate Daisy, is a very interesting native plant that may be seen on the trail near the museum. Its blooms smell a bit like chocolate. Once the yellow “petals” (florets) are gone, a ring of green bracts is left. These cup-like structures may look like green blooms but actually function as sepals. They hold the seeds which are eaten by birds or self-sow. This is a good plant for a pollinator garden.

May 9, May 22 and July 3, 2026. “The three sisters” — corn beans and squash — at Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site native garden are doing well in the “waffle garden.” Plant them together and they help each other grow. The corn provides support for the bean vines, which enrich the soil with nitrogen, while the large squash leaves provide shade to help reduce evaporation. The depressions in the waffle grid collect precious water for the growth of all three plants.
The corn is Isleta blue corn.

Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site museum will be open Friday, July 3 from 9 am to 3 pm. Stop by to learn about a 14th century ancestral village. See “The Tiwa World” mural researched and painted by Isleta artist, Deborah Jojola. Hear Tiwa spoken language. Marvel at a turkey feather blanket. Enjoy the garden of native plants. There is no admission charge, but donations are welcome.

Volunteers have completed planting of the garden. The waffle garden features “the three sisters,” corn beans and squash. Other plants, such as native to***co, Rocky Mountain bee plant and amaranth, are in the adjacent gardens. Seeds used are those saved from previous years and from trades with modern-day Pueblos. You’re welcome to visit to watch our garden grow, walk the trail with interpretive signs (open daily) and enjoy the museum (open Fridays, 10-3).
