Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. The Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc. is a volunteer run organization, established in 1972.

We focus on commemorating, studying, preserving, and sharing the rich history of the village and run the Museum of the Ironworker. The Catoctin Furnace Historical Society, Inc., celebrates, studies, and preserves the rich history of this pre-revolutionary industrial village.

Can you help us determine what this window sign at the F.W. Fraley Store advertised? We are sure that the full word is Branch (the letters BRA are missing from the left window pane). But what type of BRANCH was advertised?
Was it a special food or product? (This room, located to the left of the main store, was known as the ice cream room). Or was it some kind of financial advertisement such as Adams Express, Western Union, etc.

We have our next event coming up: Spirits of the Furnace

Saturday, October 17th, 2026

Spirits of the Furnace is a guided night tour through the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace and Village, with stops in historic structures and along the landscape to meet workers, owners, worshipers, and slaves. Seasonal refreshments included. Kids are welcome. Bring a flashlight and wear shoes appropriate for walking on uneven terrain.

Ticket Information:

$15 for adults

$10 for children (12 and under)

$2.85 automatic Eventbrite booking fee added to ticket(s)

All proceeds benefit the preservation and interpretation of the historic village.

Fall Fest is over and it has been so much fun! Thanks to everyone who helped stir the apple butter as well as all of our volunteers who made this event possible! We now have hundreds of jars of delicious apple butter available for sale! The next big opportunity to buy one is Spirits of the Furnace, another annual event coming up this weekend. Stay tuned!

It's officially fall, which means that our annual Fall Fest is coming up next weekend on October 9 & 10! Join us to celebrate the tradition of apple-butter making during this two-day event at Catoctin Furnace Historical Society. There will be blacksmithing demonstrations, several food options, crafts and more. On Saturday, there will be a Revolutionary War Reenactment which the pictures in this post give you an idea of! On both days there will be hot pancakes, coffee, and c***r available from 9-12pm. You cannot miss this event!

Last year, over 200.000 people attended The Great Frederick Fair. This year's fair is still running for another two days, so it remains to be seen whether or not this number can be beaten. It has without a doubt been a successful nine-day event where all kinds of different exhibitors came together to create a unique blend of entertainment, rides, and food options. Catoctin Furnace also had a table at the fair where we educated people about what they can see at the site and museum. We also promoted Fall Fest, our main fall event which is coming up on October 9&10!
