With great sadness, the Board of Directors of CMATO announces that as a result of significant revenue losses brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Museum will close its doors on June 19 after nearly 10 years of operation.

Founded in 2008, CMATO’s mission is to engage, educate and enrich the lives of our visitors and our community through the visual arts. The Museum has presented acclaimed exhibitions, delivered hundreds of educational programs for adults, families and seniors, and welcomed thousands of visitors since opening its first physical space in 2015.

Sadly, we are not alone in facing this unprecedented operational distress. We know from the American Alliance of Museums that numerous museums continue to face substantial financial losses, and thousands of smaller museums, long under resourced, are at significant risk of permanent closure.

This was a heartbreaking decision. While we considered a number of options, public support, federal funding and other sources have not been enough to make up for CMATO’s devastating and protracted revenue losses.

Closure is a deep disappointment to all of us who cherish CMATO, our mission and our belief that access to art, in all of its forms, is essential to a thriving community. The Museum has been a gathering place for the community for many years, allowing us to examine our shared humanity, to voice and express, and to bring people and ideas together.

We hope CMATO’s lasting impact will live on through the creativity of families, children, teachers, artists, and all who have been touched by what our original founders believed: that CMATO exists for the enjoyment, education and benefit of all.

Dear Friend of CMATO,

This is a painful message to convey, particularly as we know what CMATO means to you and to our community.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, CMATO has endured extensive revenue losses. Without significant and immediate financial assistance, we will close our doors on June 19 after nearly a decade of operation.

We are not alone in facing this operational distress. Numerous small museums and nonprofits are struggling to overcome the ongoing financial obstacles brought on by the global health pandemic. Yet this situation is deeply personal for our Board, staff and volunteers who have worked every day to fulfill CMATO’s mission to engage and enrich our community through exceptional experiences with the visual arts.

Since reopening online in April of 2020 and in-person during the spring of 2021, CMATO has enjoyed significant momentum: diverse and inspiring exhibitions that were regularly featured in the Los Angeles Times, more members than ever before and a new dedicated day just for seniors, among other initiatives. Yet these accomplishments have not been enough to make up for CMATO’s devastating revenue losses.

Although some generous sponsors and government and foundation grants have provided additional funding for the Museum during this difficult period, we were unable to regain enough momentum to cover our $250,000 annual operating budget. Without significant financial support from the community and major private benefactors who value CMATO's contributions, impending closure is unfortunately the only course forward.

The arts inspire the mind and soul and make a difference in how we live our lives. Art reminds us that we are not alone, and that we share a universal human experience. We encourage you to reflect on what CMATO has meant to you and the memories we have made together. And please stop by to say goodbye before June 19. Bring a friend.
