We are excited to announce that the NAACP Dr. Eliza and Dr. Richard Grier Scholarship is now open for the 2026–2027 academic year! This $10,000 scholarship, named by the Jack Hadley Black History Museum and an anonymous donor, honors two distinguished sibling physicians who served southwest Georgia.

Dr. Eliza Ann Grier was the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in Georgia, specializing in the care of women and children in Thomasville. Her brother, Dr. Richard Edgar Grier, trained at Howard University and practiced in Albany, also helping his sister open her medical office.

Preference is given to students from Thomas, Brooks, or Colquitt County, or those with family ties to the area. The scholarship can be used at any accredited college or university nationwide.

Applicants will submit a short essay reflecting on one of the honorees and connecting their challenges to their own experiences. Finalists will participate in a virtual panel interview as part of the selection process.

Application portal opens April 13 and closes May 22.
