Gentrification Is Erasing The Histories Of Many Communities. This Artist Is Using His Paintbrush To Fight Back.

"Murals have always been a form of communication and storytelling that can last generations. They instill values, history, and create conversation amongst the community across generations which uplifts everyone who sees them. It’s a powerful thing to remind people where they have been, where they are going, and where they are now.” Muralist Clinton Bopp.

GOOD READ

'With gentrification happening more than ever, it's incredibly important to use murals to depict communities as they are now.'

Dear parents, guardians, teachers, friends of parents, guardians, and teachers! Orchestra Miami presents the Magic Flute, and on May 12th, there will be a special matinee presentation for kids. Why the Magic Flute? First, it's Mozart's incredible music; some operas are about death or heartbreak (or both), the Magic Flute has romance for all ages (THE COSTUMES!), and it's a great way to introduce kids to opera so they can start appreciating it at a young age. One more bonus perk? this time it is conducted by one of the very few female conductors in the world Elaine Rinaldi. BRAVA!
Enter the code MAGIC for 15% of all advance purchase tickets for performances on May 11 & 13!

Mission
ARTOCONECTO is a non-profit arts advocacy organization based in the Bronx, NY, dedicated to creating, assisting and promoting unique artistic projects. We also serve as fiscal agents and grant writers to artists who need financial assistance to realize their visions.

In Washington D.C., Artoconecto pioneered the concept of the pop-up gallery, creating enormous roving art ‘galleries’ in non-traditional venues. We strive to present the most dynamic artists we can find, and provide them the platform and the tools to both engage the public, and to take bold new risks.

We also believe that the arts should have a part in every child’s life. KIDSART, introduced in Miami, FL, brings children into working artists’ studios and art spaces. It is our first program designed to introduce children to the rich cultural and artistic diversity of their communities.

Our goal is to continue to expand the dialogue between the artist and the community and to shine a bright light on creativity in the public realm. Contact us at [email protected].

Prizefighter

The "Prizefighter" is visual artist Cheryl Pope, a Chicago native who became a fighter by necessity, to save her own life, and then literally became a fighter, a boxer, in fact, of some real skill. Her pugnacious yet warmhearted style is the foundation for her work. As she notes, her practice "emerges from the act and politics of listening." She works with kids in Chicago, and her show, "I've Been Heard", can be seen at NYC's Fort Gansevoort Gallery.
Danny Brody, Artoconecto co-founder, has been writing about art since 2007. This is his first piece for Quiet Lunch, a cutting-edge New York-based arts and culture magazine. Monique Meloche Emerson Dorsch Nick Cave - Visual Artist

Today we honor the legacy that Martin Luther King Jr. left us, not only in this country but also in the entire world. In order to keep his legacy alive and well, it is important that parents, teachers, and community leaders engage in serious conversations with children about his message of unity and equality, for the betterment of humanity. #MartinLutherKingJrDay Is every day!

As Young Galleries Seek Alternatives to Art Fairs, a Promising Solution Has Emerged

Fresh!? That's great, but Artoconecto started as Pop-Up art shows in non-traditional spaces all over DC in 1999. Precisely for the same reasons stated in this article by Artsy. Just sayin'!

Pop-up spaces, or temporary exhibition spaces in new cities, are emerging as a welcome alternative to the high-stakes, high-stress experience of an art fair.
