My paintings and drawings document and bring awareness to the retired Iowa barns, corncribs and grain elevators......the dinosaurs in today's agricultural world. I am a farm girl at heart. I find beauty in the ordinary, everyday, often overlooked remnants of a vanishing way of life - the homesteads, farmsteads, especially the lone structures now empty where family-owned farms and businesses once thrived.
Pictured below is DOWN ON THE FARM. Here I have painted memories from growing up on the farm. The format is as a bird's-eye view of sections of Iowa farmland, square, 1 mile x 1 mile with a river or stream running through it. Each square piece measures 22"x22", on rough 300 # Arches watercolor paper. So, the entire project measures about 9'x9'. This project began many years ago under the guidance e of Hazel Belvo, Professor of Art, MCAD, in a workshop at the Artists Colony in Grand Marais. She directed us to make sketches under 10 different headings. This began with simple sketches and took me for a ride. I was so energized, almost obsessed with this. I am very happy to have finished all of the pieces and to see it displayed in full, as because of it's size, lays in a large box under my bed! I have had so many great comments, texts and messages about this piece in particular.
