A Special Moment, More Than 80 Years in the Making! ✈️

History came to life Friday when the family of Cadet Howes, who trained at the No. 1 British Flying Training School during World War II, stopped by the museum for a visit.

While looking through a class photograph, Cadet Howes' son spotted his father among the young men who trained here so many years ago. What a special moment for the Howes family!

These are the moments that remind us why preserving the history of No. 1 BFTS is so important. Every photograph, artifact and story connects generations and keeps the memories of these brave young men alive.

Thank you to the Howes family for visiting and allowing us to share in such a meaningful moment. ❤️

Old 42 is more than a historic airplane. She is an ambassador.

She welcomes dignitaries, delivers Santa, greets visiting families of the RAF cadets who trained in Terrell and helps introduce a new generation to the story of the No. 1 British Flying Training School.

Wherever she goes, Old 42 carries that story with her, representing the young men who came from across the world to Terrell to learn to fly and the museum’s mission to ensure their courage, sacrifice and legacy are never forgotten.

On Sept. 17, North Texas Giving Day, you can help keep Old 42 flying and carrying this remarkable story into the future.

Old 42 doesn’t just preserve history. She carries it forward.

Sometimes history has a way of reaching across generations.

Len Miller trained as a cadet at the No. 1 British Flying Training School during World War II. More than 80 years later, his son discovered something remarkable in his father’s flight logbook:

He had flown Old 42.

That handwritten entry connects one family directly to the Stearman now in our museum’s collection. In honor of that connection, Miller’s son made a donation to help preserve Old 42 and keep her flying.

This North Texas Giving Day, Sept. 17, help us reach our $10,000 goal and keep this remarkable piece of aviation history in the air.

Help us keep Old 42 flying and their stories alive.
