Our Flower Show opens this Saturday!

Joining the floral installations in the Mansion is a series of paintings by Betsy Jacks - visual artist, writer, and Executive Director Emerita of the Thomas Cole National Historic Site.

The paintings on view all feature apple trees from the Hudson Valley. The two shown here, both titled Daphne, rework the classic story of Daphne and Apollo. The transformation of Daphne into a tree is celebrated as an expression of the freedom of aging. The cracked bark of a tree is seen as a sign of beauty while aging skin is not given the same status.

Apple trees survive the harshest winters yet continue to bloom and thrive. The artist hopes the work will inspire new valuation of women as growing in strength and productivity with age.

The mansion continues to have its historic windows worked on, our master carver has been diligently working on a missing piece of a historic gothic AJ Davis-designed bench, and the Fern Garden Society has been hard at work spring cleaning the planting beds.⁣⁣

"This [house] is a perfect specimen of the most beautiful pointed styles..." -Brother Jonathan article, July 15, 1843.⁣

Alexander Jackson Davis: Designer of Dreams is this season's exhibition and will explore Davis' life, inspiration, and work on both iterations of Lyndhurst for the Paulding and Merritt families, as well as his other lost gothic residences in the area.⁣

This show will combine his ephemera and drawing archive from Columbia's Avery Architectural Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, and Winterthur, with furniture works coming from private lenders and the Smithsonian. Additional pieces also join the exhibition from the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, The New York Historical Society, the Museum of the City of New York, and Historic Hudson Valley. ⁣

If you're a gothic architecture or Lyndhurst aficionado, this exhibition is not to be missed!⁣ It opens on May 23rd and will run through September 23rd, 2025.

With our opening season on the horizon, it's time to take care of some projects on the property. The mansion windows are getting some care and attention, and our apple orchard is getting a much-needed pruning, thanks to a very sci-fi-looking spider lift!⁣

Thanks to Breton Contracting for the window care and Michael Serio, Inc. for the tree work.⁣

During the months the museum is closed, curatorial staff take the time to tackle research projects within our archive. While looking for something else, we happened across this small reused envelope labeled: ⁣

"Anna's Hair - 7 years of age - Dec. 3rd 1882" ⁣

Inside was an intact curl of chestnut-colored hair secured with yellow yarn belonging to Anna Gould! Likely saved by her mother, Helen Day Miller, it reminds us of the small sweet mementos saved by our own families and parents.⁣

Some people find the saving of hair to be a touch creepy, but we were just glad that they saved this lock of hair and not teeth!⁣

We have a winter storm coming this weekend! ⁣

Please remember that the entire property is closed during the winter, and sledding, skiing, and snowboarding is prohibited on the grounds! ⁣

During hazardous weather, we need vehicles to keep clear to allow our staff to work on snow removal around the historic buildings.⁣

Stay warm and cozy this weekend, everyone!⁣
