Happy Mothers’ Day!!!

Ayóó anííníshní Shimá

Good Morning! ☀️ Happy Mothers' Day!! 👩‍🍼

MoM - Month of May: GORMAN Mothers

May 10th - "Leila With Child" a 1978 Original Lithograph by R.C. Gorman

"I remember one time I was posing with one of my babies, and she was nursing. The whole time we were sitting, I was looking at those adorable little feet and thinking how beautiful Gorman would draw them. But he covered them up with a blanket! He did capture, though, in his own way, the motherly feeling I had." - Laila Bynoe

Laila Bynoe was one of R.C.'s regular models. She would have been 36 when this lithograph was made and it falls within the time period when she was modeling for him. I can't help but wonder if Leila and Laila aren't one-and-the-same...

R.C. on Bernadette Tracks: "She's pure Indian. She's one of the most graceful creatures that I have ever worked with. In her younger days she took up dancing at the very famous school in New York city, Juilliard. And so it just carries through in her posing for me. She's all theater. She's got some brilliant kids who are taking after her. She's a very smart woman. I'll always appreciate her."

Uncle-RC in his El Prado studio circa 1985-1987. Bernadette Tracks from Taos Pueblo modeled for this piece and many of Gorman's works.

Artwork of the Day - Chinese New Year

"Star Gazer"

Tonight is the New Moon and the start of the Lunar New Year. While there on many R.C. Gorman works featuring a gorgeous moon, tonight is the start of a new cycle.

For the Navajo, the New Year comes in October. But no matter where you are or when you mark the new year:

May you Walk in Beauty...

R.C. Gorman’s “Proud Lady”

One of my uncle’s last and perhaps most beloved lithograph, Proud Lady, embodies a timeless beauty, resiliency and majesty.

Only 136 of these lithographs were produced in the artist’s vision. Printed on Arches Buff art paper and embossed with 22k gold, each lithograph subtly portrays the beauty of each delicate line. The color palette: a rich yet restrained skin tone and brilliant turquoise on the creamy matte French paper.

Subsequent reproductions keeps Gorman’s brilliant line work, but are printed on heavy stark white reflective paper and have had the saturation boosted, shifting Proud Lady from a beautiful brown to a red skin-tone - a huge change in feel from the original work.

2025 marked the 20th anniversary of this works creation. This month marks its release.

There is a detailed video on all my socials about the process of her creation.

Navajo Women, State III
Original Stone Lithograph by R.C. Gorman

“Navajos always had respect for strong, powerful women who go out and chop wood, herd sheep, have babies in the field. My Indian woman isn’t glamorous but she is beautiful.” - R.C. Gorman
