“to witness”
A solo exhibition by Taos artist Montanna Binder
“to witness” unfolds as an inquiry into time, the environment, and the quiet, persistent processes of natural transformation and degradation. Through silver-coated surfaces and alternative photographic methods🎞️, the work reveals traces of the past as echoes of premonition, moments suspended between what has been and what is still becoming. 🌿
Rooted in a process that requires both darkness and light, isolation and connection, these works exist in tension: between presence and absence, exposure and concealment. ☀️
Marble, metal, and water 🌊🪨⏳become collaborators, recording, eroding, and bearing witness in ways the human body cannot.
Drawing from ancient and contemporary understandings of witnessing, from spiritual traditions to psychological frameworks, the exhibition asks:
What holds memory when we cannot?
What absorbs impact when no one is there to see it?
How do unseen moments shape both self and world over time?
Here, natural processes stand in as silent witnesses. Surfaces tarnish, images emerge and decay, and time inscribes itself without permission. The environment is not backdrop, but participant, marking, holding, and transforming experience.
Over / over / over again. ♻️
