150 SYLVAN GROVE FAST FACTS (15 of 15)
Well, here we are at the end of the 150 Historic Facts trail. The 2020’s were punctuated by the Covid-19 epidemic that started the decade and will not soon be forgotten. Quarantines and business closures are now a thing of the past, but our sympathies will always lie with local families who lost loved ones during this strange and difficult time.
I hope you have enjoyed reading about the progression of historic Sylvan Grove, from little settlement by the river to a new town that has been, and always will be, Home Sweet Home for many of us. Here are the highlights for the 2020’s, to date:
#141 2020: In February, 13 inches of snow was reported in Sylvan Grove.
#142 2020: COVID-19 Lockdown March 20; school was conducted on-line, businesses and churches adapted.
#143 2021: December 15 - Violent winds caused electrical blackouts, fires and widespread damage in the area.
#144 2021: Fly Boy Brewery & Eats changed ownership but continued operating under the same name.
#145 2022: Seventeen downtown buildings were named to the Historic District by the Kansas State Historical Society.
#146 2023: Sylvan-Lucas Unified High School captures Speech & Drama 1A State Championship.
#147 2024: Big Kansas Road Trip brought many visitors to Sylvan to see its many attractions and buildings.
#148 2024: Bethlehem Lutheran Church installed carillon system that plays chimes heard throughout town during the day.
#149 2025: Renovated former Farmers Elevator building opened as the new Sylvan Senior Center and Elevator Warehouse.
#150 2026: Happy 150th Birthday, Sylvan Grove!! May 23 you'll want to be in town for the Parade at 10 am followed by a bank robbery re-enactment, car show, stone cutting demo, Depot & Museum open, music and many other events are planned. A trolley will be running from the Fairgrounds to City Park for your convenience. And don’t forget FOOD! Legion burgers and food trucks await! Alumni gathering, plus a Dance in the evening!
