We are still tidying up from moving things around and are waiting on exhibit signs, but if you'd like to get a sneak peek of our holiday display, we have a multitude of long-unseen artifacts on display and hope to have signs early next week! As COVID rates seem to be rising, please remember your masks, and if you'd prefer to schedule a private time for your group to visit send us an email so that you have a chance to see our temporary exhibit!

It is, by far, the most affordable option for train rides nearby, with options for both riding "just for fun," and for enjoyment of historical programming as you ride.

The Museum's Purman Research Room will be closed to the public through November 2021 for deep cleaning and reorganization. Specific artifacts and records may be available for viewing with advanced notice. Please email at least a week in advance to inquire about this service.

Museum Tours
The curator and volunteers are available to provide tours of the museum for school groups, civic groups, scout organizations and clubs. Contact the Curator via email at [email protected].

Volunteer Opportunities
The Gate House Museum is listed under Carroll County Public Schools' list of sites cleared for Student Service Learning. This work is typically arranged in small group settings at particular times for particular projects. Please email us for details.

Adult volunteers are currently needed in the areas of:
-Garden Brigade (outdoor cleanup and beautification)
-Docents (indoors, training provided)
-Tour Guides (outdoors, training provided)
-Event help (outdoors)
-Manning tables at outreach events

About the program: Jack White and Sid Starliper will talk about the woman behind the book, In Search of Helen from Two Locks. Helen died in Springfield Hospital in 1951. Her son barely knew her, but one day in his seventies, Sid Starliper decided to find his mother. His search led him to Sykesville, the Gate House, Jack White and the discovery of a rare genetic disease that took both his mother and his sister. Don't miss this fascinating story!

On the night of Wednesday, April 17, 1957, Sykesville High School burned. At the time, there was not a public water supply, and fire trucks could not bring enough water to prevent major damage. A new high school was built. In 1968, the County Board of Education decided to consolidate Mt. Airy and Sykesville High Schools, and the school was converted into Sykesville Middle School! SYKESVILLE, MD -- Bob Allen, author and expert on the Lincoln assassination, today spoke about the Civil War in Carroll County as part of the Gate House Museum's summer series of porch talks. Allen said Confederate General Robert E. Lee originally intended for his troops to fight the Union army in the county rather than at Gettysburg. He also said a Confederate sympathizing news editor in Westminster was murdered in a town hotel. He shared curious human interest Civil War stories during his hour-long presentation.
