Today, we honor Juneteenth, a significant day in American history commemorating June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Juneteenth is a time to reflect on the ongoing journey toward freedom, equality, and justice, while recognizing the resilience, contributions, and achievements of African Americans throughout our nation’s history.

As a museum dedicated to preserving and sharing history, we believe that understanding our past helps us build a stronger future. We invite our community to take a moment today to learn, reflect, and celebrate the stories that shape our shared heritage.

Today, on National Peace Officers Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The Sweetwater Police Department proudly remembers Lieutenant Monte Huckabee, End of Watch: November 3, 1979.

Lt. Huckabee lost his life while serving and protecting the Sweetwater community, and his sacrifice remains a lasting part of our department’s history. Though many years have passed, his dedication, courage, and service will never be forgotten.

Today, we also remember all fallen officers across our nation and the families and departments forever impacted by their loss.

Please join us in taking a moment to honor their memory and thank those who continue to serve.
