As I was driving home from work tonight, my mind went back to better times. Leaving the Consolidated school, I drove past Mallye's Pond where we spent hours skating, Aunt Maude's house, Zulma Higgins corner, Maude and Dellie's house, the Odd Fellows Hall where events happened that I never wanted to miss, I went by Ross & Mildred Kent's house and around Dewsnap's Corner where we used to have a meal in their restaurant occasionally. Heading toward the crossroads was an area called "The Flats" or Eddie Scott's Flats then at the bottom of Crossroads Hill there was a dump on the left where we would just open our window/door and toss out a bag or two of trash beside the road (it got quite high sometimes)! As I headed toward Minturn, there was the Poor House and on through Ghost Hollow where the ghost was seen walking near/on the water in the cove. Eddie Stanley lived in a tiny house just before City Point Rd. Kathleen Stanley lived across from where the Store was, then Johnny & Louise Martin's home where Dolores (Martin) Roberts lived, Bud & Melita Staples (my childhood home) was where we played so hard and always outside with the neighborhood kids. Across the road was Ricker & Beulah Ranquist home where we played. Across the road from them was the area where we chased the smell of cigar/cigarette smoke that was surely Indians. We had no doubt at all.

If I had gone into Atlantic to our 2nd home, we would have gone by the Tar Barrels where tar was heated to patch the roads, around Cottles Cove corner and on to Central Office Corner and then the Telephone Company before pulling into Dad's garage parking lot.

Am I missing any noteworthy area? Clint Staples, Jean Ranquist, Dolores Martin Roberts, Linda Ranquist Reinhardt? My next trip might go further into Minturn or Atlantic before going into the Harbor.

Wondering what is going on at the Historical Society??? We are preparing to put put the original Methodist Church building onto a new foundation in order to preserve that structure. In order to do this it was necessary to remove the annex which had significant structural water damage. This process began last Spring with the packing and storage of our abundance of artifacts.

Friends and supporters,

We have begun a series of building renovations to help preserve our museum space. As stewards of local history, we believe it’s essential to care not only for our artifacts and archives, but also for the historic building that houses them.

These improvements will ensure our facility remains safe and accessible for all visitors—now and for generations to come. During this time, you may notice some construction activity or temporary changes to our hours and operations. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we move forward with these efforts.

As part of these renovations, we’ve been cleaning out the annex in preparation for its removal. This space has served our community well over the years, hosting many luncheons, Sunday school lessons, and, more recently, ice cream socials. It’s also been the hub for behind-the-scenes work, thanks to the dedication of our many volunteers.

This effort is in preparation for restoring the foundation of the museum, which houses our artifacts and the steeple. While plans are still in progress, this work will eventually require relocating the original structure. A project of this scale wouldn’t be possible without the support of our directors, volunteers, and generous donors.

Every contribution—large or small—directly supports the preservation of our museum. To donate, please visit swansislandhistory.org/donate or contact us at [email protected] for more information.

With gratitude,

Dorothy LeMoine
President, Swan’s Island Historical Society

A memoir of short stories about growing up on an island on the coast of Maine.

65 years ago yesterday, March 13, almost the whole population of Swan's Island met at the ferry landing to watch our first ferry, the William S. Silsby, come into the pen. Us young ones even had the day or part of the day off from school for this momentous occasion. Several families rode back across the bay to what was then called McKinley but is now Bass Harbor. What do you remember about that day besides the excitement?

Happy 2025 all!
Below is an excerpt from Dr Walter Bruce's report from 1964 when he and his team searched for native American artifacts on Swan's Island. This year, we'll be adding a new exhibit focusing on the native Americans who made Swan's Island their home for all or part of the year. We could use help from folks who have some knowledge in this area especially if you were part of this club! You don't need to be on the Island to participate. Please either respond to this post or email us at [email protected]. We'd truly appreciate it!
