✨ Installation Day!

Phelps-Hatheway is proud to partner with suffield_schools and the Suffield Historical Society Inc to present an expansive student exhibition in the Hatheway Barn.

Through a variety of media, students have created thoughtful works that trace our nation’s rich history and celebrate individuals, both well known and lesser known, who have helped shape our community and our country.

Join us on Friday, June 5, from 6:00–7:30 p.m. for this exciting exhibition. A walking tour of historic South Main Street will take place concurrently, offering another opportunity to connect with our past.

Special thanks to the many community partners whose support made this event possible. We look forward to celebrating the creativity and hard work of these talented students!

Visitors to the Butler-McCook House & Garden often admire its remarkable architecture, its serene garden, and the rich stories of the four generations who lived here beginning in 1782. Yet beyond these familiar highlights awaits a surprise: a remarkable collection of art. Created and collected by family members over time and during their travels, these works appear in every room, lining the walls, tucked into corners, and offer insights into their deeply rooted creativity and curiosity.

Among the most compelling stories is that of Eliza McCook Roots (1869–1934), eldest daughter of Eliza and Reverend John James McCook. Serving as a missionary in Hankow, China from 1899 until her death, she endured years marked by political upheaval, natural disasters, and failing health. Like her mother, Eliza recorded her experiences through art, filling a sketchbook she shared with her family in Hartford. These early drawings not only capture her exotic new surroundings, but also reflect the artistic tradition passed down through generations.

We invite you to join us this Saturday, May 1, for two special programs celebrating the arts in our capital city:
✨ 10:00 AM–12:00 PM: Explore Hartford’s arts and monuments with Jana Colacino
✨ Beginning at 1:00 PM: Hourly tours of the Butler-McCook House, featuring highlights from its collection
✨ 2:00–3:00 PM: A special tour focused on the home’s art collection
